Doctor: 3 victims critical in Ga. FedEx shootings

KENNESAW, Ga. (AP) -- A doctor says three victims are in critical condition - and two of them with life-threatening wounds - after they were shot multiple times at a FedEx station outside Atlanta.

In all, six people were wounded in the shootings Tuesday morning, and the suspected gunman was found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot.

Dr. Michael Nitzken at Wellstar Kennestone hospital told reporters two of the victims had been treated and released while a third remained at the hospital and was stable. He said each of them had wounds consistent with shotgun blasts.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

A package handler with an assault rifle and bullets strapped across his chest "like Rambo" opened fire Tuesday morning at a FedEx station outside Atlanta, wounding at least six people before police found the suspect dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot, police and witnesses said.

Two of the victims were in critical condition after police rushed to the center at 5:54 a.m. to respond to a call about a gunman, said Cobb County police Sgt. Dana Pierce. He said the gunman, who was found dead inside the package-sorting facility, worked for FedEx as a package handler.

FedEx clerk Liza Aiken said she was working inside when she heard something drop, looked to her left and saw the gunman.

"He had bullets strapped across his chest like Rambo, a huge assault rifle and he had a knife," Aiken said in a parking lot where employees were gathering near the station. Before she could continue, a woman wearing a FedEx jacket told Aiken to stop talking and led her away.

Six people wounded at the FedEx station were taken to nearby Wellstar Kennestone hospital. While two were considered critical, others had less serious injuries.

"A lot of them were able to walk off the ambulance," said hospital spokesman Tyler Pearson.

David Titus, a FedEx truck driver, said he was just coming to work when he saw someone walk up and shoot a security guard in the abdomen outside the building. He said he could hear more gunshots after the gunman went inside.

"It was chaos," Titus said. "Everyone was running ducking and hiding, trying to get out of there."

FedEx said the facility about 25 miles north of Atlanta is a hub where packages are sorted and loaded onto vehicles for delivery. It's located next to the general aviation airport for suburban Cobb County.

Police kept roads leading to the FedEx station blocked after the shooting. Dozens of workers were taken by car and bus to the parking lot of a skating rink about a half-mile away to call relatives for rides. Some family members got out of their cars and hugged the workers. Several employees said they had been told not to speak with reporters.

The identity of the gunman was not immediately released and police did not discuss a motive.

The company was cooperating with police but had no details to release about the shootings.

A FedEx statement said: "Our thoughts and prayers are with those affected, and with their families and friends. We are grateful for the assistance of law enforcement. The situation is now stabilized and we are focused on the needs of our team members and cooperating with the law enforcement investigation of this tragedy."

WAKE UP AMERICA, Do you not think that all the violence that is showed on the propaganda box, at the movie houses, video games and etc. Are not causing people to get away from what really matters. Let alone what it is doing to the young people's minds. Why is it that America buys that garbage. Look at Japan, they are enjoying ( probably laughing at us) while selling this crap to american, yet they do not let their people have axcess to those videos. What happened to the good shows. All you see now is , killing and blowing the Hell out of everything. PARENTS you need to say NO to your children when they want that kind of trash. OPEN YOUR DAMN EYES PEOPLE. OH and the meatheads in washinton need to get their heads out of their butts, and start to get AMERICA back the way this country once was. STRONG. My Grandfather was a immigrant, and he was a proud man, to help get the counrty what it once was. I am convinced that his pride would be very much tested today. He told me back in the early seventies, the propaganda box is going to reck havoc in this country, look where we are today. HELLO PEOPLE.

Instead of over pontificating on these sites, why not try to do something to help change the world? If you are not part oof the solution, you are part of the problem.

From my experience working for a security company employed by FedEx, the officers are not armed. They should be! FedEx management places more emphasis on deterring Internal Theft than protecting their facilities from armed assaults. Oh sure, they post signs saying no guns or knives allowed but, signs don't stop bullets! To my knowledge, they (FedEx) have no effective procedures in place to protect their employees in the event of an armed assault. What they do have, is a half-hearted attempt to make their facilities look secure. In some cases, they control access to employee entrances and in others they control access to public entrances but, I've never seen TOTAL access control. For example, Package Handlers are checked in and out of the buildings and must go through Metal Detectors. Drivers, on the other hand, drive their trucks into loading areas without being checked. Once they leave their vehicles, they are allowed to enter the facility either bypassing the metal detectors or, are allowed to go through the Metal Detectors unchecked even if the alarm sounds. In substance, FedEx' security procedures are limited to preventing thefts by Package Handlers and nothing more.

The only thing worse than no security is, a half-hearted Security Program! If FedEx employed Armed Security Officers and posted them at the entrance to the employee and customer parking areas, at the driver entrance, at the customer entrance and at the employee entrance their Security Program would reflect a state of preparedness to deal with any type of emergency. In today's world of terrorists and "crazys", individuals and companies need to face force with force! Companies are expected to provide their employees with a safe working environment and in this case, FedEx didn't do that......

Just an FYI in Georgia law - Signs prohibiting guns have no weight of the law behind them and you do not have to abide by them if the place in not on the "Off limits" list if your are properly licensed. If the owner of the business with the sign sees the gun and asks you to leave, you must without haste or you could be charged with "Criminal Trespass" which could in effect help a person lose their right to carry.

It is typical liberalism. They have to make everybody feel their pain. That and sheer stupidity are the hallmarks of being a nasty liberal.
