NY sanitation worker rescues American flags from the trash

NY Garbage Man Rescues American Flags From The Trash

One remarkably patriotic sanitation worker in New York is going above and beyond the call of duty to preserve the honor of Old Glory.

According to WLNY, 53-year-old Ed Shevlin has been collecting the American flags he finds thrown away in the trash, rescuing them from the dump in order to give them a proper disposal later.

So far WCBS reports Shevlin has collected over 700 flags, many of which were destroyed during Superstorm Sandy. Shevlin told New York Daily News he wants the flags to have a more dignified send-off than the back of a garbage truck.

"I view them as an entity that has served the country. ... Let's give it the honor that should be accorded to it."

And Shevlin's got the law on his side. Title 4 of the U.S. Code requires a dilapidated flag to "be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning."

Newsday reports Shevlin's flags were destroyed Saturday in a formal ceremony at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. Shevlin received a special commendation at the ceremony.

I think this is so great! My family has served our country and I would of done the same thing! I'm glad there are people out there who appreciate the people who have sacrificed their bodies, time, and health to give us our freedom. THANK YOU!!!

You are an honorable American, Mr. Shelvin. It's a shame that you are exceptional, we should all be like you. Perhaps we could start by teaching civics in schools again, so the young can learn about what a fantastic country we live in and how much we should respect it, it's symbols and it's traditions. Even more, we need to teach why our constitution is one of the most important documents ever written. It means nothing to today's generations. What a shame. Or,.....is it by design???

We have boxes in our county offices where you can dispose of older flags properly. We don't throw our flags in the trash. I'm glad there are some decent Americans still left in NY - the city, upstate is quite different when you get out into the country

Many Americans like to wave the flag. Too bad they have no real respect for it.

What really bothers me is tattered bumper stickers with the flag.

Need more people thinking the way he does...the US flag is a symbol of greatness and SACRIFICE.
Does not belong in landfill!

Awesome! Thank you Mr Shevlin for showing honor for our flag and our country. You certainly deserved special commendation for doing the right thing which the US requires worn flags to be disposed in a proper manner. Thanks again.
