Woman booted from gym for baby bump

Pregnant Woman Says Her Belly Got Her Kicked Out Of Gym
A woman was kicked out of a South Carolina gym for wearing a belly-skimming tank top. Here's the kicker: She's 18 weeks pregnant.

Melissa Mantor says an employee at Planet Fitness gym approached her after she'd been on a treadmill for about 10 minutes and told her she needed to change.

She says this was the first day she went to the gym when her baby bump was actually showing.

But Planet Fitness' draw is a non-intimidating atmosphere where people at any level of fitness can go and not feel judged. That comes with a dress code.

The gym's corporate dress code does not mention shirts showing midriffs, but WCIV obtained a statement from Planet Fitness public relations saying this particular location has a policy against bare midriffs. Each franchised gym is allowed to enforce its own dress code.

KFOX reports still, that no-judgement policy backfired when it came to Mantor. She says she has never felt more judged or embarrassed about her body before.

Mantor cancelled her membership the next day and hasn't re-upped, despite Planet Fitness managers calling her with offers of free memberships.

If the gym has a no bare midriff dress code, and they've required guys with beer guts to either change or leave, then there's literally no issue. On the other hand, if they're inconsistent with application of their dress code...she's in the right to complain.

maybe now she can open the front door and go for a walk instead of getting in the car driving somewhere and paying someone to walk on a machine.

I luv this . . but you just can't do 'practical' anymore with the younger generation. Perhaps they find the expression "take a walk" offensive! lol

Planet....dumbness! Sounds like maybe one ignorant employee who took it too far. They should have just told her about the dress code and asked that the next time she came in to wear something different, not told her she needed to leave right then.

Well tact may have been lacking, but when you sign up you agree to their dress code. It included no jeans, no hats other than baseball caps, and no open toed footwear or boots. I never saw anyone sent out for having a large belly, so she can just get a larger shirt that covers the area. No big thing, and not really news.

I would hope that more of the persons making all of the criticism comments about her and the supposedly bad presentation of herself could grow up. It would be in a good number of other people if the get it into their judgemental minds that here is at least a woman who puts excercise into her life rather than sit around and have time to judge her and write their comments here. Get off the posterior and go there and work out to be offended. Perhaps a good number of the critics belly button is protruding too far for them to at least do what she is doing. I would think that her working out might be a bit more about being a healthy and good sense mom. Thank God abortion is not the issue. She will not have to answer for the limited worthless comments from those who think it is a good thing to do.

You have to notice that the tummy set who are actually working out are more inspired by her seeing their own tummy is more of an embarassment to them than hers is to them. So do yourself a favor and be glad she even makes this level of awareness come about that some people are written up with stupidity thinking that is what will bring in the business and set a good example of care. All the writing saying the stupid mentality of the gym employee was in the best interest of the gym or the woman should realize the gym has spent more effort trying to get her to come back either because they are desperate for the money (hers or those who will judge them and skip them) or the realization that the free press they are now receiving is expeosing the brains of the folks thinking they are great at the gym even though the gym is retracting the position. Follow their example and retract yours to show you think outside the box.

This doesn't have anything to do with her being pregnant. If the location has a no bare midriff policy that goes for everyone.

Don't blame her. There are lots of centers that would be happy to have her join.

She wasn't asked to leave she was asked to put on a shirt........and they probably should have then brought over a copy of her contract and pointed out the section that explains the dress code. I don't see what the health club did wrong.....except expected this person to read the contract all by herself. Wow welcome to adult hood and being a mom.

I'm not sure I even understand what statement she was attempting to make by showing her pregnant belly anyway.

Oh my god the woman reading this story makes me want tear off my ears. You know you don't have to have someone read the story out right? It's written right there... and we can all read. Plus you wouldn't have to spend money on having countless awkward presenters read out 2 minute long stories. I'm sure that money could be put to better use.

Plus I'm sure I'm not the only one who groans and instantly looks for the mute button every time a video starts when I click on a link?

Just a thought.
