There's something funny about these Boston Marathon runners' bibs

Bib Fraud At Boston Marathon
This year, security at the Boston Marathon could have made it one of the safest events in America - but runners still fell victim to an unexpected crime: fraud.

Several runners found pictures of strangers wearing the same bib numbers in marathon photos posted online.

One runner, Kara Bonneau, says she posted a picture of her race bib on multiple social media accounts on Saturday. After finishing the race in an impressive three and a half hours Monday, she went looking for pictures of her crossing the finish line.

She typed in her number, and five results came up. Obviously only one was her, but four others, two men and two women were captured finishing with the same exact bib.

Bonnaeu says they likely made copies of her bib from her Instagram post - but its unclear if all four fraudsters were connected.

The incident has sparked outrage among attendees who say it's not fair that these Boston bandits took medals from people that paid to be there. Unfortunately, Bonnaeu says she contacted marathon officials who said, "There's nothing they could do, and that these things happen."

So a word of caution to runners who are actually qualified to race in any marathon - save your race pics until after the finish line so no one else crosses it that shouldn't.

It seems that even with all the reports of fraud, identity theft, etc., some people are just too ignorant or too stupid to understand that posting things on the internet is not safe. Why would anyone post their bib# BEFORE the race? Same with bicycle races or anything else (including tickets to events), why post your information so that someone else can copy it? THAT IS JUST PLAIN STUPID!

Our world always had it's share of problems. As we see in the posts here. Some can't help putting down others opinions. Protect yourself at all times. Don't give out unnecessary information. As we see here on this very thread,...it will be used against you. Yes, as for the one poster who left the message,"Things aren't fun anymore", It seems harder and harder to have good, safe fun. Don't give up.
You who mock, protect your children from the very thing you pass onto others. Don't be part of the problem.

jcou38 do you sit up at night trying to say racist stuff? They took a picture of a person winning the race. Stop trying to make more of it than it actually was. Are you any relation To Al or Jesse?

When you get what you want in your struggle for self
And the world makes you king for a day
Just go to the mirror and look at yourself
And see what that man has to say.

For it isn’t your father, or mother, or wife
Whose judgment upon you must pass
The fellow whose verdict counts most in your life
Is the one staring back from the glass.

He’s the fellow to please – never mind all the rest
For he’s with you, clear to the end
And you’ve passed your most difficult, dangerous test
If the man in the glass is your friend.

You may fool the whole world down the pathway of years
And get pats on the back as you pass
But your final reward will be heartache and tears
If you’ve cheated the man in the glass.

She can't play the victim when she plastered the images of her bib across her social media channels. It's her own fault and now she just sounds petty and victimized.

Why be a contender and not register for the race?? Why would you want to win and then have somebody call you a cheater for not registering.? Makes no sense.

So much for their "security"-- it just goes to show that if someone wants to infiltrate an event , they can and will, kind of makes you wonder who else snuck by the official's, why they did so, and what they accomplished.
Luckily, it ended well, and if the worst thing to come out of it was someone stealing a couple of medals they did not earn, great..

The fraudsters run the race for free, stealing from the Boston marathon. They don't steal anything from the runner. The runner is tracked by the chip, so only the actual paid runner will get official credit with the time. The photo people ID by the bib number, so anyone with that number will ID as the registered runner. The Boston Marathon could grab any runner who crosses without the chip, which is what they really use to ID you with.
