Report: Stowaway's mom says son believed her dead

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) -- The mother of a California teenager who stowed away on a flight to Hawaii told Voice of America that her son had recently learned that she was alive after being told by his father she had died.

Speaking with VOA from a refugee camp in eastern Ethiopia, mother Ubah Mohamed Abdullahi said she felt bad that her son risked his life and that her dream is to live with her children in the United States.

""I cried, felt badly and many people in the refugee camp came to me to give me support," she said.

FBI agents say surveillance video shows the 15-year-old jumping out of the wheel well of a Hawaiian Airlines jet on a Maui tarmac Sunday after surviving a cross-Pacific flight from San Jose, California. He told authorities he had argued with his father before leaving his house.

The 5 1/2-hour flight over the Pacific would have exposed him to sub-zero temperatures and very low temperatures, likely knocking him out for the duration. He has been hospitalized ever since.

The boy's parents are divorced, and he lives with his father, Abdilahi Yusuf Abdi, a cab driver in Santa Clara, California.

Abdullahi said her ex-husband took their three children to California without her knowledge, and that she hadn't heard from them since 2006.

"I know he was looking for me, and I am requesting the U.S. government to help me reunite with my kids," she told VOA.

A lot of these incursions get covered up. I was on a USAIR flight from Paris CDG to Charlotte a few years ago. While we were waiting for the doors to shut after final boarding, some idiot got on the tarmac, climbed up the jetway, walked over the plane, pushed back the overhang to the door and dropped into the plane and ran through the plane. Luckily he was noticed by the flight attendant who was standing in front of the door as he dropped down and more lucky two US sky marshals were on board. He eventualy turned out to be a mental issue, but can you imagine if he was a person with a bomb. I can tell you that long flight over the atlantic was very long. We all to had to disembark and then get back on after the incident. lo and behold, I never saw anything about this in the news except a few brief sentences on a french website. talk about hush-hush. geez

My concern is that the news concerning this boy's actions could give terrorists a new idea for placing bombs on aircraft.

Diane, may your heart first go out to this young man who is lost and needs to be re-united with his family!

Tomorrow is another day. The young man is alive and seemingly non the worse for wear. Onward and upward!

"Sub-zero temperatures AND very low temperatures"? Last time I checked, that was repeating yourself, repeating yourself.

Okay Okay so there was a breach..wrong doing on the part of many... Move forward and try and find a way to bring some positive joy to this world and figure out a way to reunite this son and Mother...

We read everyday of kids locating the biological parent... Someone figure this out and we can all enjoy the outcome...

This man is wrong in taking the children away from their mother without her knowledge. Every GOOD parent wants their with them but the children get really messed up with separate and divorced parents. Parents need to be more careful when it comes to their children. The children suffer not the parents and they think they are the ones suffering. Its ALWAYS the children who suffer and stray and turn to the wrong people and the wrong way of life. Its time parents stop putting their selves first and put the children first by THINKING of preparing these children for what is going to take place.

It's a shame, but divorced parents do this type of crap to their kids without considering the consequences it will have on the child. The father should get charged with child endangerment or something and maybe he will think twice before doing something so idiotic again.

Bring the mother to her kids or send the kids to their mother and arrest the father for kidnapping and charge him.
