Report: Stowaway's mom says son believed her dead

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) -- The mother of a California teenager who stowed away on a flight to Hawaii told Voice of America that her son had recently learned that she was alive after being told by his father she had died.

Speaking with VOA from a refugee camp in eastern Ethiopia, mother Ubah Mohamed Abdullahi said she felt bad that her son risked his life and that her dream is to live with her children in the United States.

""I cried, felt badly and many people in the refugee camp came to me to give me support," she said.

FBI agents say surveillance video shows the 15-year-old jumping out of the wheel well of a Hawaiian Airlines jet on a Maui tarmac Sunday after surviving a cross-Pacific flight from San Jose, California. He told authorities he had argued with his father before leaving his house.

The 5 1/2-hour flight over the Pacific would have exposed him to sub-zero temperatures and very low temperatures, likely knocking him out for the duration. He has been hospitalized ever since.

The boy's parents are divorced, and he lives with his father, Abdilahi Yusuf Abdi, a cab driver in Santa Clara, California.

Abdullahi said her ex-husband took their three children to California without her knowledge, and that she hadn't heard from them since 2006.

"I know he was looking for me, and I am requesting the U.S. government to help me reunite with my kids," she told VOA.

While this is a sad story did any one bother to think that air port security dropped the ball again...How in the H### does this person get out on the tarmac and is able to stowaway in the wheel well WOW!!!!....just goes to show you, air port security has anal cranial insertion!!! Way to go airport security. Final thought,if a 16 year old boy can do this would be a piece of cake for a terrorist with training....there should be heads rolling at that air port

Have you looked at the scene near a loading aircraft? There are baggage handlers, mechanics, fuel truck drivers, and others, all swarming around. All you need to do is LOOK like you MIGHT belong, and you are 'in'. The rest is easy. Except for the COLD! And SOMEHOW not falling OUT of the wheel well at landing time!

This adds more grief to the original story. I hope the mother gets to reunite with her children.

A lot of these incursions get covered up. I was on a USAIR flight from Paris CDG to Charlotte a few years ago. While we were waiting for the doors to shut after final boarding, some idiot got on the tarmac, climbed up the jetway, walked over the plane, pushed back the overhang to the door and dropped into the plane and ran through the plane. Luckily he was noticed by the flight attendant who was standing in front of the door as he dropped down and more lucky two US sky marshals were on board. He eventualy turned out to be a mental issue, but can you imagine if he was a person with a bomb. I can tell you that long flight over the atlantic was very long. We all to had to disembark and then get back on after the incident. lo and behold, I never saw anything about this in the news except a few brief sentences on a french website. talk about hush-hush. geez

Americans aren't hateful. We simply realize that we cannot take care of the entire world or we will become like it. Until we know how the father got here with the children we shouldn't pass judgment however taking children from their mother and fleeing to another continent is not a comforting thought.

I wouldn't expect any help from this administration! Sounds like the father needs to lose custody of this boy.

Well, dad needs to get deported for being a ******** and lying to his son about his mom being dead and the boy needs to get his wish and return to africa. As for the other 2 kids, they probably need to go back too but as they have lived here for several years already that would probably be cruel and unusual punishment at this point. But seriously, do we just let anybody in these days? A little research on immigration's part would have probably revealed there was a mom who did not want to give up her kids.
