Extremely rare crossbreed born at Mexico zoo

Extremely Rare 'Zonkey' Born At Mexico Zoo

Zoinks! Or should we say 'zonks.'

An extremely rare zonkey, a cross between a zebra and a donkey, has been born at a Mexico zoo, ABC reports.

The zoo says little Khumba is a rare case in the animal world because the zebra and the donkey chromosome are not known to be compatible.

So, how did this little zonkey come to be? Fox News reports he was born April 21st, and NBC has more on what's really kind of a love story.

"Turns out the father, a donkey named Ignacio, visits, if you know what I mean, the mother zebra almost daily at the zoo."

Although he is quite rare, there have been a few other instances of zonkeys. The Telegraph reported on one born at a zoo in China a few years ago.

And last year a zonkey born in Italy made international headlines - he's believed to be the Italy's only zonkey. He's become such an attraction that there's talk of a Disney cartoon based on him.

Hopefully, little Khumba will shoot to stardom, too!

A zonkey (donkey/zebra) and a zorse (zebra/horse) are only "rare" because donkey's and horses and some zebras are owned as pets. People don't have any intention of breeding them except for their own personal pleasure.

I noticed from the video that baby zonkeys and old guys like me get up the same way........
Keep flaying your legs back and forth until the momentum swings your weight far enough.

What is with the over use of the word "Creature"? Call it what it is. Or is the writer afraid we won't read the article unless they keep us in the dark?

why would they want to cross bred two species....just because they can? Or it is because it will be a rare one and that would bring in more money....both reasons are not a good one the way I think. They probably will find out that he won't be able to breed .....just like when a donkey and horse breed...they get a mule and mules don't and can't breed. That is nature's way of saying no it isn't a good idea to do this. You all have a blessed day

They critters were penned together. I doubt the zookeepers thought anything of it since donkeys and zebras will usually not mate or even hang out with each other.

Just relax. He was just a horny donkey and stuff just got, well you know, HORMONES and all.

Cross a horse with a donkey and the result is a mule despite the different number of chromosomes in horse and donkeys as well. The male mules can't reproduce, and only a portion of the female mules can reproduce when crossed back to a horse. Males mules become sterile, and can't reproduce.

That true for any crossbreed. Ligers, donkey/horse, donkey/zebra, or any other crossbreed can not reproduce.

Too bad it doesn't work that way when Africans cross with Caucasians !
