US threatens to pull aid to Haiti over late vote

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) -- The U.S. government has warned Haiti that it risks losing aid if it doesn't hold elections that are more than two years overdue.

The U.S. Embassy in Port-au-Prince said Thursday that none of the money set aside for the Haitian government by the State Appropriations Act will be available until the U.S. State Department certifies Haiti is "taking steps" to hold the legislative and local votes.

The money at stake is about $300 million that the U.S. Congress allocated for Haiti for fiscal year 2014. The money is earmarked for Haiti's coast guard, health ministry and other projects.

Haitian officials are under pressure to organize the elections for this year. The executive branch and Chamber of Deputies signed an electoral law this month but the Senate has yet to approve.

Based upon a long history, whatever elections are held in Haiti, no matter the result, will not result in a constitutional, democratic, competent government. In the words of Hillary: "What difference, at this point, does it make?"

Folks you don't know how your government works.
Foreign aid is Not a check in the mail. That was tried, and the money went to numbered Swiss accounts. Especially money to Haiti. Foreign aid is a "gift card" of American Products. Yes foreign aid is employing your neighbor. The contractors selling Foreign aid is the usual group of vetted corporations. It is easier to monitor and they understand what expectations are. Foreign aid is diplomatic manipulation. Much cheaper than landing the Marines somewhere.

Sad to say aid to Haiti will not change the goverment of Haiti. The money is not spend on the people. Thus the rich get richer and the poor die.

This was so sad to see all these billions of USA dollars go to Haiti only to be stolen, squandered and mis-used. I was there 1 1/2 years ago, the place is still a hole, desolate and broken down, still areas not cleaned up from the quake. Why would they need more money? Just good money after bad !!!! I can think of some good projects right here in the USA that could use that money, our kids, our elderly, our military, our veterans admin. Obama shame on you, take care of the USA before you take care of the world.

Haiti has one of the most corrupt governments on Earth. Not that we are much better, but the Haitian people will see no benefit of those funds because it is all going into the pockets of American contractors and the Haitian politicians that grant them the contracts. If you have ever been to Haiti and The Dominican Republic, next door, you will see some nice hotels on the beach, nice government buildings and all of them resting on a sea of shanty, tin roof make shift houses where the multitudes of the poor dominate the landscape. It is no wonder why they risk their lives, crossing dangerous seas with dangerous people to try to set foot on our shores. What we should be doing is making sure we spend the money so it benefits the people of Haiti rather than letting the Haitian politicians spend it. We are such suckers.
