Earth Day 2014: Celebrate by looking at 11 amazing photos of our planet

In 1970, millions of Americans concerned about the environment observed the first 'Earth Day.' Forty-four years later, the tradition and message of conserving our beautiful planet is still going strong. On Tuesday, April 22, NASA released a photo of the Americas captured by NOAA's GOES-East satellite to commemorate the occasion.

Above, take a look through some of the splendid photos of Mother Earth that have been shot from outer space through the years. From the original Blue Marble photo shot back in 1972 to the new high-definition Blue Marble images to a screen shot of the very first video image of Earth taken by a weather satellite in 1960, the photos are breathtaking on any day, but take on a special meaning on Earth Day.

scottee, The Government actually supports fossil fuel use. They feel that by supporting Industry, industries create jobs, and that's a good thing. Sure, there's a price to pay, but they have confidence that industry will "figure something out". . . .eventually. And furthermore, a wholesale move "away" from fossil fuels would cause the oil companies pain.

On the other hand, I favor. . . say, taking a Tesla (former EV1 in 1990s Caif) electric auto, adding a TDI Diesel "Generator" to replace/augment the lithium ion batteries. And then, growing 10 million acres of Veggies (corn, peanut, palm) to be refined into veggie diesel fuel and thereby running the Tesla as an electric/diesel/veggie fuel auto - while we require all future autos to be 100% recyclable (limiting oil drilling, raw steel production, etc) thereby creating a couple million jobs along the way.

You want me to think, that the Govt can't figure this out?

If earth day was so great how about making produce more affordable. instead of making people fatter by making processed horrible foods cheaper. If the world wants to celebrate earth day than make healthier foods more affordable. No more plastic bottles. Give away reusable bottles instead of making us spend 10+ bucks for them. Obama needs to turn back on the water supply for the farmers so we can get fresh pruduce. Dumb idiot. How else is that idot going to eat after he becomes president.

horrible processed foods are not cheaper than whole foods. only whole foods should be able to be purchased with SNAP or EBT cards.

They photoshopped it out.. it was gaining too much weight and it didn't stick to its strict water and lemon diet. Who knew big black clouds were so yucky? Not the American people! :)

I remember the first Earth Day in 1970 when I was in college. I read some Harvard "expert" claim that in 20 to 30 years the human race would experience a environmental disaster that would put our species on the road to extinction. I think it was an Ice Age he expected. Even as a naive junior it seemed crazy. So instead of studying for my next exam I bought a bottle of wine and shared it with cute girl on the grass at the pond on campus. It turned out to be a good day to forget about the coming disaster. I passed the exam and 44 years later no disaster . I wonder where that expert is now?
