Earth Day 2014: Celebrate by looking at 11 amazing photos of our planet

In 1970, millions of Americans concerned about the environment observed the first 'Earth Day.' Forty-four years later, the tradition and message of conserving our beautiful planet is still going strong. On Tuesday, April 22, NASA released a photo of the Americas captured by NOAA's GOES-East satellite to commemorate the occasion.

Above, take a look through some of the splendid photos of Mother Earth that have been shot from outer space through the years. From the original Blue Marble photo shot back in 1972 to the new high-definition Blue Marble images to a screen shot of the very first video image of Earth taken by a weather satellite in 1960, the photos are breathtaking on any day, but take on a special meaning on Earth Day.

isnt it Amazing! We have such a Beautiful World and yet so much strive, hunger, anger, war, religions , infighting... Imagine IF a World Leader, Like Reagan can say HEY Knock it off Kids, get back to what you do Best! Not Make worse, if we keep ourselves happy, be more concrened about the next person, and maybe the Ladies are Right too, treat each other like you'd treat your Momma who got you here in the First Place!

I actually complained to someone chairing an event at an Earth Day event one year of the City not having a bottle recycling container in one part of the city. "So what?", was the answer I received. I knew Earth Day had lost its meaning then.

Funny how all the Liberal Hollywood types who complain about how we are destroying the planet spend their free time flying around the world going on vacation and driving expensive SUV's.

Same thing with Al Gore. They seem to have the attitude that it's okay for them because they are better than us! Look at the politicians, they have the same attitude!

The weather people have changed the location in each state from one location to another to give them the tempeture reading they want. Most reading now come from city or airport locations where there is planty of tarmac and heat islands. This was not true 20 years ago, when weather was taken from weather obsevatories located outside of cities. The level above the ground and above sea level can also change the tempeture. Where are these dramatic sea level changes? Only places where erosion has taken place do they say the water is rising. Phoney science, by phone scientists.

who said earth day is a holiday? it's just a day to stop and appreciate this wonderful planet that feeds, clothes and shelters us. i'm sure the planet would appreciate it if we didn't pollute and otherwise destroy it.......by whatever means. and as far as lenin's birthday is concerned, everyday is someone's birthday. no conspiracy here.... only in paranoid minds.

A caption identifying the continents and locations of the photos would be helpful considering the low knowledge of geography of our naion.

Ummm, I have no trouble with identifying what continents, etc were in the pictures.

Anyway, what did puzzle me was which volcano was in that one picture. The title made no mention of it even tho it was easily observable as a volcano with it's cloud of smoke, etc.
