MRI find could be weight-loss 'holy grail'

'Holy Grail' Of Weight Loss? New Find Could Be It
Most people desire to have a little body fat as possible, but researchers have found there may be one type of fat you want a little more of.

In what could be a major breakthrough for future obesity treatments, CBS reports scientists in the United Kingdom have used an MRI scan to pinpoint brown fat in a living adult for the very first time.

What's brown fat? One of the study's authors tells Fox News:

"What most of us imagine is 'fat' is actually white fat, which stores [excess] energy and increases in size, [leading to] obesity. But there is another type of fat: brown fat ... it does is the complete opposite. Instead of storing energy, it actually burns off energy, and in that process, it releases heat."

If you look at this image, which shows the upper chest of a person as if viewed from the feet, you'll see that the green areas represent places of potential brown fat. According to The Huffington Post, it had previously only been found in the shoulders of newborns.

The finding is significant for the development of future weight loss methods.

This is because according to ABC it's currently believed a sugar cube size of brown fat, if activated properly, could burn about six to nine pounds of white fat in a year. You know, the bad stuff you spend hours in the gym trying to work off.

There are currently no existing weight loss therapies focusing on brown fat, but one the study's author says if a treatment could be developed, it might be the, quote, "holy grail" of weight loss. Basically, you'd be able to burn bad fat without exercising.

The New York Times explains there are some issues though - leaner people likely have more brown fat, while obese people have less. Younger people also have more than older people, and women have more than men.

Scientists say the key will be figuring out maximize these stores of fat.

Round and round we go and why we can't lose weight EVERYBODY KNOWS!!!! Yet weight loss and maintaining our weight loss is and has been a huge battle for years!! All of us who fight the battle of being "overweight, obese, chunky, fat, big boned, tubby, need toning," and all other descriptions used to describe our bodies know the simple fact is........to lose weight and keep it off is a total life commitment!!! We must learn to take in LESS calories than our bodies burn.....the weight comes off ......to maintain the weight loss we must control the calories we take in for the rest of our lifes!!! The "color" of our fat doesn't matter........just like the color of our skin!!!!!!

One way is through temperature control...always keep your room slightly cooler than you would normally.... to where you start shivering ...yes shivering.... helps increase brown adipose tissue.

I have been on a weight loss journey recently. And as hard as it has been to eat clean and healthy food, I keep my eye on the prize and follow the motto - Skinny Tastes Better.

This isn't coming anytime soon so let me give you a piece of advise. I have lost 100lbs and kept it off for 2yrs with no tricks no pills, no special diets, and this is how it is done:
1. Eat less than you burn - don't cheat, don't lie, don't make excuses - you will not die if you have to go through the drive through for your kids and not buy anything for yourself, you will not hurt your metabolism if you skip that lunch where nothing healthy is offered, if you are afraid of a headache take an asprin, don't sabotage yourself.
2. Move everytime you find yourself sitting still - you do not need a gym or a scheduled time, you need to be active as an every minute thing not as an 3 times a week thing. Stand when you would have sat, take the stairs, park further out, dance in the livingroom with your kids or your cat (I want video proof if it is with the cat), fix your posture, take your kids to the park and play with them (not watch them play), there are a million exercises that take zero funds and no more time than you already spend.
3. Don't stop, don't take a vacation from it - the food and the sedentary life are an addiction taking a vacation from it is like an alcoholic having just one more drink. These are not things you can do until you have control over it. Once you are at goal weight and you no longer feel the drive to eat the way you did and lay around (yes you are laying around, you only think you are not because you are use to it) then you can work limited amounts of treats back into your life.

Just because it is a lifestyle change does not mean you will be as miserable as you are in the beginning for the rest of your life. If you stay strong and do not cheat your body and mind will adjust and you will be just as happy with a salad as a burger most of the time. Moving will be easier too and even pleasant sometimes. Life is better thin. I hurt less. I use to think things were impossible that I now do everyday. I am 35 and I am in better shape and have more energy than when I was 21. Stop waiting for a miracle and go make your own.
