Mohammed Whitaker charged in Kansas City-area highway shootings

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Authorities announced charges Friday against a Kansas City-area man suspected in connection with about a dozen recent highway shootings that have wounded three people.

Jackson County prosecutor Jean Peters Baker said at a news conference that 27-year-old Mohammed Whitaker of Grandview has been charged with 18 felony counts and is being held on $1 million bail. Baker said Whitaker was charged with two counts of shooting into a motor vehicle and injuring a person, seven counts of shooting into a motor vehicle and nine counts of armed criminal action.

At least six of the shootings occurred near Grandview. The Kansas City suburb is home to an area known as the Grandview Triangle, where three interstates and U.S. 50 intersect.

Other shootings were reported in the Missouri suburbs of Blue Springs and Lee's Summit and Leawood, Kan. Two of the wounded drivers were shot in the leg, and the third was shot in the arm. None of their wounds was considered life-threatening.

The last confirmed shooting believed to be connected to the case was reported April 6, about a month after the shootings began.

Whitaker was taken into custody Thursday at a home near Interstate 49, one of the highways that intersects at the Grandview Triangle. Police also confiscated a dark green Dodge Neon.

Police began noticing a pattern about two weeks ago after receiving reports of apparently random shootings at vehicles. Earlier this month, investigators were looking into about 20 reports of shootings, but that number has fluctuated. Late last week, police said they had connected a dozen shootings to the same person, but they have said little else about how the shootings were linked or what kind of vehicle the suspect drove.

Police did not say what led them to the suspect, but have said they received more than 100 tips. A reward of up to $10,000 was offered for information leading to an arrest. Police haven't said if anyone will be claiming the reward money.

The 73 year old Kansas Nazi sympathizer/Jewish center shooter will be charged with a hate crime and rightfully so. Let's see if this Mohammed gets equal treatment.

You know what's really ironic about that particular murderous idiot? He came those Jewish facilities because he wanted to kill Jews. But those 3 innicents he killed were all Christians; so he killed those he claimed he wanted most to protect, i.e., white American Christians who would probably have had nothing to do with him and would have considered him a nutcase. That's what happens when fools like he and Mohammed Whitaker decide who has the right to live or die. Now here's a question for you, if you want to know who Muslims kill more often than anyone else? It's their own fellow Muslims, and of those, it is the women who are the greatest victims. Learn something about Islam, they've been slaughtering each other with happy abandon for centuries, ever since the Shi'a and the Sunni split into two separate theologies. And it's been going on for about 1400 years. And you wanna bet they'll continue their 1400 year old enmity well into the future as well. And you wanna bet that Mohammed Whitaker had no knowledge of that either.

Makes no difference what his religious beliefs are, or aren't. The guy needs to be taken off the streets. If you can just indiscriminately shoot at people like he did, not caring at all for another persons life, you've forfieted your right to live freely amongst people.

At this point you don't know why he did it. But, you're wrong about religious beliefs not making a difference. It makes a difference for a muslim who believes all non muslims should be dead the same as a westboro baptist who believes all gays should be dead.

Not your normal crazy white man subject; but John Allen Muhammad broke the mold in the DC area. Interesting that this guy first name is the same as John Allen's last name - just spelled differently. Could this be a hate crime. Apparently equal time for Nazis and other crazies. Normally, I think that the reason for choosing the victim should be irrelevant. The focus should be on the crime itself. Does it really make it worse that he shot someone because of his race or religion versus for profit; ie. a robbery?
