Young raises $6M in Kickstarter campaign for Pono

NEW YORK (AP) - Neil Young has raised more than $6 million through a Kickstarter campaign to fund the singer-songwriter's digital music project PonoMusic.

Kickstarter closed the campaign Tuesday after it raised $6.2 million through 18,000 supporters. The campaign is the third most-funded project for Kickstarter.

Young's portable player will cost $399 when it debuts in October. PonoMusic will also launch an online music store. The project promises high quality audio compared with other digital tracks that feature compressed audio.

The Kickstarter campaign was launched last month.

Young, 68, named the company Pono after a Hawaiian word meaning righteousness.

Neil is my favorite musician of all time! I began following him when I was 14 and now I'm 57. A true artist in every sense of the word and he gives so much back, constantly paying it forward along with his wife Pegi. He is has a been a pioneer in electric car technology and now this! It's just so awesome to be surprised on what he is doing. See you at the Bridge School benefit again this year!
Wouldn't miss it for the world........but when are you going to play Last Trip to Tulsa in one of your concerts? I bet it will sound great on Pono!

So many are asking for a handout. Not for the poor, for themselves.

Yeah the rich get tons of federal subsidies -home mortgage deductions, 1. half the tax rate of the 1960's, 70's and 80's, an uproariously low tax on capital gains( the preferred income of the too-rich-to-work), and $$millions of exemptions from inheritance taxes to pork subsidies and write -offs. No wonder the USA has such a giant deficit-it has been generously $$$funding the rich and elite for 50 years..Social "programs"-ha, the programs favoring the rich, who lease need it are appalling.

Yeah, let's hear it for BONO> Filthy rich guy who talks a lot, but has little action. Did he give away all his millions and live in a modest house..and only ONE house or condo? NOT !

I am embarrassed for you Neil that you asked for a handout for yourself. So many people like you would could care less about anyone else beside themselves. I am embarrassed for you and your family. Think of someone besides yourself. Do you know what that money could have done for the hungry? You could have been a hero. TY

The way it works is he uses the money to start a company which then needs to hire people to produce and manufacture and market, etc. When he pays those people their salary, they pay for their cars an groceries, etc. Everyone wins. There will be fewer hungry when there is new wealth.
