Classes to resume at Pennsylvania stabbing school

Students Return To Pa. School After Stabbing Rampage

- Apr. 16, 2014 7:15 AM EDT
MURRYSVILLE, Pa. (AP) - Students planned to gather in prayer and in support of one another on the football field of a Pittsburgh-area high school where classes were scheduled to resume Wednesday, a week after a mass stabbing.

School and public safety officials have been working toward getting things back to normal at Franklin Regional High School since 21 students and a school security guard were stabbed just before classes began a week ago, a county official said.

On Monday, teachers met with a crisis intervention specialist before spending the day at the school getting re-acclimated to their surroundings. On Tuesday, parents and students were invited to an open house of sorts where they were able to tour the building, which had been cleaned and restored after the bloody attack. Members of the community gathered at a local park Tuesday night for a prayer service.

Suspect Alex Hribal, 16, is being held in a juvenile facility but is charged as an adult with aggravated assault and attempted homicide in the stabbings. Four students remain hospitalized.

Students at the middle and elementary schools, which share a campus with the high school, returned to classes a day after the attack. Dan Stevens, spokesman for the Westmoreland County Emergency Management Agency, said this week has been marked by events preparing for Wednesday's return to a normal schedule at the high school, culminating in a pre-dawn gathering on the football field organized by students.

"Getting back to school today is going to be a very good thing for them," Stevens said.

About 30 members of the Newlonsburg Presbyterian Church next to the school showed up to support the returning students, lining the street near the high school's entrance. Many held signs saying such things as "F R U are loved," ''It's a new day," ''Just know you are not alone," ''Prayers for healing," and "Courage."

Karen Ingersoll said she has two children who graduated from the school and two daughters who attend it.

"I think they were ready to go back," she said.

She said her younger daughter still can't sleep alone after witnessing some of the attack, but she expects that she will recover eventually. She and her daughters came to the open house, which she believes helped.

"I feel so bad for the teachers. Some of them looked so shell-shocked," she said.

She said therapy dogs present at the open house will be at the school all week.

The school's spring break is this weekend, so students will attend classes Wednesday and Thursday, will be off Friday through Monday and will return Tuesday.

I have a brother that he started having behavior problems after he took some medicine for acne, the dermatology gave him medicine for his pimples when he was around 19 years old. I met somebody with a son that he changed his behavior after he took medicine for acne, the doctor think he has mental problems, but his mother assure me that he changed after he took the medicine. I hope somebody read this and check it.

I The main issue here I think is. The kid obviously had problems, whether it be bullying itc.....The relationship with his parents were not the kind that he could confide/talk to them about it., It might of helped if he could. On the other hand, There must of been some telltale signs about his behavior that his parents should of noticed.

Most of them have no one to talk to today the only thing they have is a dam TV or game and as we know it will not work. When my kids were small they had at a least an hoour a day that they could talk to ma about anything I was on their level and they knew it. But they also knew that i was an adult the rest of the time they still call me and talk about things today that is called raising a child. You DON"T see that today.

Violent films, games and lyrics are the metaphorical straw that broke the camel's back. Because the propensity to commit violence is already there in each individual. That is still no excuse to profiteer off violence.

We can thank the Lord he didn't have GUNS. Instead of countless "fatalities" ... there are injuries. But ZERO DEATHS. If this kid had access to guns, the outcome could have been TWICE as many victims and several DOZEN deaths.

Lawyers are the problem, they turn every senseless murder inrto a moneymakeing opportunity. How much better it was when every obvious murde rer was quickly tried and executed.

Qualified attorneys are needed for due process and best defense. Everyone is entitled to that per the US Constitution. Far too many people are demanding to shred the US Constitution - unless words work for to their self-absorbed benefit, or so they far too often presume.

If we tear down every school that has a tragedy like this, in 10 years we won't have any schools. It's lawyers and the media.

You know it is sad....But this kid snapped ...YOU HAVE TO KNOW he had been bullied unmercifully...I am lots older and yes we would fight it out without weapons ...The deck was still stacked ..I was a Bully myself and now have to face some of the things I did ...The films , games, and just the themes of daily life , I think teach some people that this is some kind of """Justice """...Ii have witnessed parents and children trying to turn in ""Bullies "" to the POLICE and get BULLIED by the "POWERS THAT BE """...This is an issue that has NO definitive answer ...I had to learn the HARD WAY about Bullies....Just wished ALL BULLIES would get BULLIED before something like this Happens....

"mass stabbing . . . 21 students stabbed" Would it make sense to explain what happened - how someone managed to stab 21 people without being stopped and the context of the whole thing? Or is the word "stab" so startling that all we need to know is "people were stabbed" and don't bother with the details?

This is sensationalizing to the point of lacking any information. Terrible lack of professionalism.

this kid needs help. Immediate help. I bet his parents know something about the WHY. If he was no problem at school it was at home. He did not feel comfortable telling the school because they do NOT listen and only criticize and blab what the students divulge about their conversations. For some reason he felt the need to act out. He needs help more than sanctioning

Right, because when they are white, they are mentally ill. When they're black, they're thugs or animals.
