Man charged with hoax near Marathon finish line

BOSTON (AP) - A man taken into custody near the Boston Marathon finish line late Tuesday, the anniversary of the deadly pressure cooker bombings, had a rice cooker in his backpack and was being charged with possession of a hoax device, police said.

The man was stopped by an officer who saw him acting suspiciously, including walking down the middle of a street barefoot in pouring rain, Police Superintendent Randall Halstead said. The man dropped the backpack and told the officer it contained a rice cooker, he said.
Boston Police Detonate Unattended Bags At Finish Line

The incident took place hours after ceremonies to mark last year's Boston Marathon bombings, in which two pressure cooker bombs hidden in backpacks exploded, killing three people near the finish line and injuring more than 260 others.

The backpack Tuesday night was blown up by the bomb squad as a precaution as was a second unattended backpack found nearby. Halstead didn't release the identity of the man in custody and wouldn't say what was in the second backpack or who owned it. He said police were investigating.

The backpacks rattled nerves days ahead of this year's marathon as police kept people away from the finish line area for about three hours and trains bypassed the nearby Copley Square station.

"With the marathon coming, our officers are taking it seriously," Halstead said. "The safety of the public is utmost."

Survivors, first responders and relatives of those killed last year marked the day with tributes. Former Mayor Thomas Menino and Vice President Joe Biden were among those who spoke at the nearby Hynes Convention Center. A moment of silence was held at the finish line in the afternoon.

That sick bastard. He thinks that is funny? Lock his ass up for about 20 years or better still, ship him off to Gitm, see if he can laugh that off. Total disrespect.

I think they should garnish his wages from his pay checks (that is if this loser even HAS a real job.) to pay for the efforts it took to have all these people come in and detonate his litte toys. After he does a least a couple of years in the slammer anyway. What a hunk of junk.

There should be more to this story.

However, hopefully this man (possible transient), walking in the rain, without shoes with a backpack, may have some serious emotional issues unrelated to any intent to cause harm or damage, mayhem, threats or pranks regarding the devastating incident last year.

I hope that this is just some misguided emotionally disturbed individual that did not connect the dots regarding carrying a rice cooker and the new precautions regarding the marathon. If it was in fact someone that was going to do a sick prank, I hope that there would be an applicable law to prosecute him.

I am always amazed at how stupid people can get....it’s hard to fix stupid and he should pay. We should send the message loud and clear this kind of stuff is unacceptable and will not be tolerated without paying a high price.

Think persons who do these acts have to be mentally ill. Cannot imagine a healthy person doing this act.
