Man charged with hoax near Marathon finish line

BOSTON (AP) - A man taken into custody near the Boston Marathon finish line late Tuesday, the anniversary of the deadly pressure cooker bombings, had a rice cooker in his backpack and was being charged with possession of a hoax device, police said.

The man was stopped by an officer who saw him acting suspiciously, including walking down the middle of a street barefoot in pouring rain, Police Superintendent Randall Halstead said. The man dropped the backpack and told the officer it contained a rice cooker, he said.
Boston Police Detonate Unattended Bags At Finish Line

The incident took place hours after ceremonies to mark last year's Boston Marathon bombings, in which two pressure cooker bombs hidden in backpacks exploded, killing three people near the finish line and injuring more than 260 others.

The backpack Tuesday night was blown up by the bomb squad as a precaution as was a second unattended backpack found nearby. Halstead didn't release the identity of the man in custody and wouldn't say what was in the second backpack or who owned it. He said police were investigating.

The backpacks rattled nerves days ahead of this year's marathon as police kept people away from the finish line area for about three hours and trains bypassed the nearby Copley Square station.

"With the marathon coming, our officers are taking it seriously," Halstead said. "The safety of the public is utmost."

Survivors, first responders and relatives of those killed last year marked the day with tributes. Former Mayor Thomas Menino and Vice President Joe Biden were among those who spoke at the nearby Hynes Convention Center. A moment of silence was held at the finish line in the afternoon.

TERROR is not just created by the explosion ??? terror is also felt by the public , of the idear that there could be another explosion from some copy cat,or other hateful people , or who ever ??? the idear is it could happen and it is close to the date ? the idiot is saying it was a hoax , what like the radio report of alien invasion years ago ,? where people jumped to thier deaths because they were terrorfied " of what was about to happen to them " not every blog is a good place to screem about your " BIG BROTHER SYNDROM" this jerk made a choice to go in that area at that time with a hoax bomb in a back pack , and barefoot to draw attention to himself so when questioned he could say , there is a rice cooker in that bag ???? he intended to prevoke a response , well he got one , and i hope they throw the book at him , you go ahead and keep bashing the police over everything that happens , and there will come a day they deside it just isnt worth the risk of ridicuel from the public to act in your behalf , and theres no law against that , nothing in thier job description says they have to step in harms way for us , they do it on thier own , they could play it safe , but no , somebody needs help so they go ??? not all cops are bad ? not even most ? but there are bad eggs in every city , some are rotten to the core ? but dont bash the names of the many good officers out there just to throw your hate at the bad ones , do that to them local and personal ? and remember the good cops doing thier job for all the right reasons .

Do not know you,but what you say I 1 hundred % agree. Why play with something that us Americans take very seriously.Police do risk their lives to help the citizens so,if they get to the point of taking action because one wants to play or commit this act knowingly this is dangerous to the moment and these officers are wanting things to be cool calm and normal for the citizens but, also they are feeling this feeling that "they may have to take action at any giving moment"and for this guy to act in this way while these officers are feeling in their way of a high possibility to shoot, then he who commits false action knowing what token place in the past, and I'm sorry cause I do not like people getting hurt for jive, but committing actions during a moment like this is no jive,if one commits knowing what America just went through and his/her actions is viewed strongly to similarity of what they prepared to take actions against then He/She DESERVE what ever action is taken towards them, rather it's being shot, capture and life in prison, capture and death sentence,or what ever actions is taken or used for the moment to make peace in the city of Boston or anywhere in our Country known as America Baby.May God be with us all and sorry for the victims,God bless the police officers,Government Officials,And all the Doctors and Nurses that participate in that tragedy.

The name of the fool who was arrested is Kayvon Edson. His idiotic stunt was purportedly intended as "performance art." I doubt any of the surviving victims, on the anniversary of the terrorists' bombings, are likely to appreciate this ill-conceived, illegal hoax. This stupid simulation of last year's terrorism attack quickly generated a prompt response from the Boston Police bomb squad and law enforcement, causing an evacuation of the finish line area. It boggles the mind to think how Edson could be so lacking of simple common sense. Where is his compassion for the victims and others of Boston who were on site in remembrance?

Why in the world would it boggle your mind and cause you to wonder where his compassion, etc. is? Are you really so out of touch with the real world that you can't envision abnormal mentality?

Are you the mental health police? Try to stay on topic and dial back the hostility. "Boggles the mind," is a harmless expression used for emphasis, not a blanket statement. Why did you feel the need to be insulting? Again, try to stay on topic and don't be such a dick.

Think persons who do these acts have to be mentally ill. Cannot imagine a healthy person doing this act.

You got to be big time stupid to play games with the Boston Police like this. Come on, you cant see how a back pack with a round metal container would cause concern?
