Argentine zoo shows off white tiger triplets

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) - The Buenos Aires Zoo is showing off its latest brood of white tigers - Bengal triplets with piercing blue eyes and a playful attitude.

The two female cubs have prominent black stripes and tawny white coats, while the male is nearly pure white.

Zoo veterinarian Guillermo Weimeyer says they were born three months ago following a labor that lasted more than four hours, and will keep breastfeeding until they reach five months old, even though they are already eating a kilo of meat a day.

This is the second set of cubs for the mother, Cleo, and father, Rhiano. Their first brood was taken to other zoos, and these cubs will likely leave as well.

A naming contest among children who visit the zoo has already begun.

Save a pet's life. Go to www.petfinder.com to find animals nearby you who need a good home. Pets provide unconditional love, distress people, lower blood pressure and are super fun! They make excellent pals. If you can't or don't want to own one, foster for a rescue group - also very fun!

Genetically altered white tigers for profit is what we have here. This occurs from inbreeding of tigers to get the recessive gene. For every perfect white tiger born dozens are born with horrible genetic defects and often die shortly after birth. But you won't hear about those tigers. Why? Because the public demands "white" tigers & will pay money to see them, hold them & take pictures with them. When we educate ourselves and only when we demand that these animals not be exploited for profit will it stop. Let's focus on conservation of the limited tigers in the wild (less than 3000) otherwise there will be no tigers left for our grandkids kids.

You are absolutely right. Given the status of tigers in the wild, zoos all over the world should be focusing on breeding healthy genetic stock to keep these beautiful animals from going extinct. White Tigers aren't healthy genetic stock. Yes, they are cute, but the survival of the species is more important.

So Teri, you are ok with the inbreeding? Sons to mothers, sisters to brothers, fathers to daughters? ALL white tigers are inbred & have all sorts of genetic abnormalities. They are all crossed-eyed for example, all of them! To have 1 white tiger while dozens die from genetic problems...and you don't care how they were conceived. As long as you can look at a pretty white tiger then let's keep creating them for your entertainment! SMH! I urge you to to a little research on the subject and maybe you'll have a change of heart. (I was unaware of how they were "created" up until about 5 years ago, but now I know better and want it to stop) Please look up specifically Kenny the White Tiger. (and I hope you don't see this as me bashing you, would just like you to educate yourself on the reality of the White Tigers. TY

So beautiful ! Shame that they have to be genetic reproduced due to near extinction thanks to mankind. All the same whatever they do with them I hope the Copenhagen zoo never gets their hands on any of them.

Sweet babies. Cleo looks distressed when separated from her cubs.
Don't send any of them to the Denmark zoo!
