Man charged with hoax near Marathon finish line

BOSTON (AP) - A man taken into custody near the Boston Marathon finish line late Tuesday, the anniversary of the deadly pressure cooker bombings, had a rice cooker in his backpack and was being charged with possession of a hoax device, police said.

The man was stopped by an officer who saw him acting suspiciously, including walking down the middle of a street barefoot in pouring rain, Police Superintendent Randall Halstead said. The man dropped the backpack and told the officer it contained a rice cooker, he said.
Boston Police Detonate Unattended Bags At Finish Line

The incident took place hours after ceremonies to mark last year's Boston Marathon bombings, in which two pressure cooker bombs hidden in backpacks exploded, killing three people near the finish line and injuring more than 260 others.

The backpack Tuesday night was blown up by the bomb squad as a precaution as was a second unattended backpack found nearby. Halstead didn't release the identity of the man in custody and wouldn't say what was in the second backpack or who owned it. He said police were investigating.

The backpacks rattled nerves days ahead of this year's marathon as police kept people away from the finish line area for about three hours and trains bypassed the nearby Copley Square station.

"With the marathon coming, our officers are taking it seriously," Halstead said. "The safety of the public is utmost."

Survivors, first responders and relatives of those killed last year marked the day with tributes. Former Mayor Thomas Menino and Vice President Joe Biden were among those who spoke at the nearby Hynes Convention Center. A moment of silence was held at the finish line in the afternoon.

Think persons who do these acts have to be mentally ill. Cannot imagine a healthy person doing this act.

This sounds like an attempt to see what they can get away with, and see how security really is, so they can plan the next real attack... Same with airports... and such... They never stop... It all trial for them... and yes, they are terrorists... I will say it again... terrorists... Obama can't seem to say it...

the guy obviously knew that with the security in place he would be noticed. maybe he did this to test the security.
i think he has an ulterior motive.
its time to make an example of him.
cut off his head and put it on a spike at the entrance of the city.
this should serve notice that these cops aren't screwing around

You know, with all the ridiculous new laws, there should be one more added, and that is specifically for ******** like this. DEATH BY STUPIDITY, catchy, isnt it? I mean how stupid can you be to think leaving a pressure cooker on the finish line of a tragic memory deserves death. If not literally, then figuratively at the very least. Putz

He said he was looking for 'exposure'. If he wanted to get noticed he could have come up with a better idea than that. Really looked like he was on drugs!

All these shooters would not be here if it wasn't for "exposure". They care more about their wacked out causes than the people they kill. The people are a "tool" for them, just like the backpack or the rice cooker are. There is no way to hurt them, although I would like to get on that smacking line suggested above. That's why I don't think there should be a prison sentence. Just kill him. Stop wasting our time and taxes. What's the point of torturing him? We don't need or want anything from him. Weed him out and buy some little kid a trumpet to play in the school band with the money we save on feeding this scumbag for the next 20 years. Hate begets hate.

Someone NEEDS to take this guy, smack him hard, place him in a prison cell long enough to think about how stupid this was, play him all the victim's recovery documented videos, smack him again and then place him downtown on a wooden chair all tied up for the people to get a good look at him and say what they really feel, and give last year's survivors a chance to smack him again across the face. That would be my punishment for this sick prank. . . But I'm not a politician.. Obviously... This country's in desperate need for an eye of an eye. REDIFINE THIS COUNTRY'S JUSTICE SYSTEM NOW!

TERROR is not just created by the explosion ??? terror is also felt by the public , of the idear that there could be another explosion from some copy cat,or other hateful people , or who ever ??? the idear is it could happen and it is close to the date ? the idiot is saying it was a hoax , what like the radio report of alien invasion years ago ,? where people jumped to thier deaths because they were terrorfied " of what was about to happen to them " not every blog is a good place to screem about your " BIG BROTHER SYNDROM" this jerk made a choice to go in that area at that time with a hoax bomb in a back pack , and barefoot to draw attention to himself so when questioned he could say , there is a rice cooker in that bag ???? he intended to prevoke a response , well he got one , and i hope they throw the book at him , you go ahead and keep bashing the police over everything that happens , and there will come a day they deside it just isnt worth the risk of ridicuel from the public to act in your behalf , and theres no law against that , nothing in thier job description says they have to step in harms way for us , they do it on thier own , they could play it safe , but no , somebody needs help so they go ??? not all cops are bad ? not even most ? but there are bad eggs in every city , some are rotten to the core ? but dont bash the names of the many good officers out there just to throw your hate at the bad ones , do that to them local and personal ? and remember the good cops doing thier job for all the right reasons .

Do not know you,but what you say I 1 hundred % agree. Why play with something that us Americans take very seriously.Police do risk their lives to help the citizens so,if they get to the point of taking action because one wants to play or commit this act knowingly this is dangerous to the moment and these officers are wanting things to be cool calm and normal for the citizens but, also they are feeling this feeling that "they may have to take action at any giving moment"and for this guy to act in this way while these officers are feeling in their way of a high possibility to shoot, then he who commits false action knowing what token place in the past, and I'm sorry cause I do not like people getting hurt for jive, but committing actions during a moment like this is no jive,if one commits knowing what America just went through and his/her actions is viewed strongly to similarity of what they prepared to take actions against then He/She DESERVE what ever action is taken towards them, rather it's being shot, capture and life in prison, capture and death sentence,or what ever actions is taken or used for the moment to make peace in the city of Boston or anywhere in our Country known as America Baby.May God be with us all and sorry for the victims,God bless the police officers,Government Officials,And all the Doctors and Nurses that participate in that tragedy.

I think they should garnish his wages from his pay checks (that is if this loser even HAS a real job.) to pay for the efforts it took to have all these people come in and detonate his litte toys. After he does a least a couple of years in the slammer anyway. What a hunk of junk.
