Former NFL player accused of shooting NFL hopeful

Former NFL Player Accused Of Shooting NFL Hopeful

Police in Louisiana arrested a former NFL player in connection to the shooting of an NFL hopeful late Friday.

The Times-Picayune reported that police charged 36-year-old Brandon Winey with attempted second degree murder for allegedly shooting 24-year-old Tahj Jones. Jones is a senior and former linebacker at Louisiana State University. Winey also played for LSU from 1997 to 2000.

Jones was shot just two days after taking part in LSU's pro day. Police say they don't know how the two former LSU players know each other, but they say Winey and Jones saw each other when they both met up with a female friend at her apartment Friday night.

WAFB reported that police said the two got into a fight at the apartment located in Sulphur, Louisiana - about two hours out of Baton Rouge. That's when police say Winey pulled out a gun and shot Jones in the stomach. Winey allegedly left, and the woman inside the apartment took Jones to the hospital.

USA Today reported that Jones was flown to a hospital 100 miles away in Alexandria for surgery.

Winey was arrested at his home nearby a short time later on charges of second degree attempted murder, according to the Bleacher Report.

WBRZ reported Jones was in serious condition Saturday night and is currently recovering from emergency surgery he got earlier in the day.

Jones is eligible for the NFL draft in May, but Bleacher Report says it's unlikely he'll get drafted - regardless of Friday night's shooting. Winey is currently in jail on a $1 million bond.

It will only be a matter of time, an incident like this WILL HAPPEN in the NFL, two active starting players involved in a shooting and how will NFL commish Roger Goodell handle it? Makes me wonder if "Draft Day" starring Kevin Costner is a "positive image" building film for the NFL.

Never mind... I got the FULL story from another site.

"NFL.com reports that Winey, the former LSU offensive tackle, played in 24 games over three NFL seasons: 2001 and 2003-04, with Denver, Washington and the New York Giants."

At least SOMEONE knows to tell the WHOLE story.

Suze, you are spot on. I have been with aol forever and still have it because of many of the features I am used to. However, the writting is terrible. Stories are often without crucial, basic information and many times grammar is stomped upon, let alone the misuse of words such as their or they're.

We need to stop idalizing these pro athelets. Try working a real job with a normal paycheck. Matbe then they will appreciate wat they have instead of throwing it away. This is not what we want our kids to look up to.

Just another day in the hood. What is wrong with these talented ball players that they cannot stay away from trouble? You have a God given talent, and then you waste it by hanging out with thugs????

It is sad when 10% of the AOL news stories are about NFL criminals.

Well, these things happen in the NFL community as well. These incidents are really isolated and not reflective of a subculture that celebrates violence and machismo.

Here you go again attacking white people. How do you know that this person isn't Hispanic, Oriental, Native American, or from the Mid East? Always blaming white people. Sounds to me like you are a bigot.

Such a disgrace to the race. Wake up Black men and smell the coffee. You are making it hard for young Black males who are about the business of becoming productive citizens in this country by getting and education and staying out of trouble with the law. It is sad to see so many of your in the world of sports who are too stupid to realize that what you do reflects on us as a race.

Your problem is that you equate everything to race. What "normal" person just takes out a gun to shoot someone in an argument? So I think you meant to say "Wake up men". You're the biggest racist of all and you don't even see it.

I'm guessing Virginia is a black woman who is expressing concern that the men of HER race are acting this way.

If that's the case, there's nothing racist about it.
