Former NFL player accused of shooting NFL hopeful

Former NFL Player Accused Of Shooting NFL Hopeful

Police in Louisiana arrested a former NFL player in connection to the shooting of an NFL hopeful late Friday.

The Times-Picayune reported that police charged 36-year-old Brandon Winey with attempted second degree murder for allegedly shooting 24-year-old Tahj Jones. Jones is a senior and former linebacker at Louisiana State University. Winey also played for LSU from 1997 to 2000.

Jones was shot just two days after taking part in LSU's pro day. Police say they don't know how the two former LSU players know each other, but they say Winey and Jones saw each other when they both met up with a female friend at her apartment Friday night.

WAFB reported that police said the two got into a fight at the apartment located in Sulphur, Louisiana - about two hours out of Baton Rouge. That's when police say Winey pulled out a gun and shot Jones in the stomach. Winey allegedly left, and the woman inside the apartment took Jones to the hospital.

USA Today reported that Jones was flown to a hospital 100 miles away in Alexandria for surgery.

Winey was arrested at his home nearby a short time later on charges of second degree attempted murder, according to the Bleacher Report.

WBRZ reported Jones was in serious condition Saturday night and is currently recovering from emergency surgery he got earlier in the day.

Jones is eligible for the NFL draft in May, but Bleacher Report says it's unlikely he'll get drafted - regardless of Friday night's shooting. Winey is currently in jail on a $1 million bond.

Just another day in the hood. What is wrong with these talented ball players that they cannot stay away from trouble? You have a God given talent, and then you waste it by hanging out with thugs????

"Our black athletes, who aren't going to graduate, can beat your black athletes who aren't going to graduate." "Coach Carter set a good example for all athletes. While your in school, go to class and learn something. Being a thug or a gangsta isn't cool for anyone. Money can't fix stupid. There is more to life than playing ball.

Why can't it be like the days when I grew up in the county of Pueblo Colorado. We had god old parking lot therapy, not wonder I became a social worker. We beat the hell out of each other and the loser held no grudges, shook the hand of the winner or we fought again and maybe again until we got it out of our systems. We never used knifes, guns, rifles, bats or anything else. It was just our fists, feet and that was it. Now everyone has to have a gun. Please do not get me wrong I am not against people's right to bear arms. I personally do not own one, but I am not in this fight for or against guns. It is not for me to judge. What I am against is people that can't take their beating like a man and the pull out a gun, shoot the other person and ruin many lives besides his own. I do believe if you are going to own a gun you must be responsible with it. It is not a toy or a tool to settle a score, even the playing field when you are getting beat. It is these types of people that make the gun ownership look bad when most gun owners use them for hunting, or if someone breaks into their home and protect their family. There is nothing wrong with that. Yet in this case they both appeared to enter the apartment as friends or at least acquaintances. We have not learned or have been taught to talk things down, control, manage our anger, walk away or sit down and discuss our differences. Maybe it is because I am a social worker, worked at a state hospital and had to talk down some pretty big, scary mentally ill people so we did not have to tie them up, take them down like animals and I was good at it. Maybe this should be part of school curriculum starting in kindergarten. It would be more valuable than social studies or other subject you may never use again. Maybe could be an elective for more points or something. Paul
