Prosecutor makes bombshell claim about shooting incident Friday

PRETORIA, South Africa (AP) - Oscar Pistorius was accused by a prosecutor Friday of shooting his girlfriend through a toilet door as the couple talked and argued in the early hours of Valentine's Day last year. The dramatic courtroom exchange ended the world-famous athlete's first week testifying at his murder trial.

Pistorius denied the charge as prosecutor Gerrie Nel pushed the Paralympic champion on his version of the exact events in the seconds before he killed Reeva Steenkamp by firing four times through the stall door in his bathroom with his 9 mm pistol on Feb. 14, 2013.

"She was standing behind the toilet door talking to you when you shot her," Nel put to Pistorius, saying the couple arguing was the only "reasonable explanation" for why she was standing behind the cubicle door and facing it.

"That's not true," Pistorius replied.

Pistorius says he shouted at what he thought was an intruder in his house and also at Steenkamp to call the police. Nel said that if that were the case, she would not have stood up against the door. She would have retreated away from it. And she would have responded to Pistorius, the chief prosecutor said.

"I don't think anybody could say where she would have stood," Pistorius replied.

Prosecutor: Steenkamp Was Scared Of Pistorius

The double-amputee Olympian is charged with premeditated murder for Steenkamp's shooting death. He claims he shot the model and rising reality TV star by mistake, thinking she was an intruder about to come out the toilet and attack him.

Nel led the double-amputee runner through his own account of what happened in those moments before he shot Steenkamp. He said he heard a noise in the bathroom and moved down a passage on his stumps toward the bathroom while screaming to his girlfriend - who he claims he had believed was in the bedroom - to get down and call the police. Pistorius says he then heard what sounded like the toilet door slamming; then kept quiet as he reached the bathroom entrance; then heard a noise in the toilet that he perceived to be the sound of wood on wood, which he said made him think someone was opening the toilet door - which he said fit badly in the frame - to attack him. And then, Pistorius said, he opened fire.

At each stage, Nel argued that the account was improbable, questioning why Pistorius did not establish where Steenkamp was and make sure she was OK, and why he would approach the alleged danger zone if he felt vulnerable on his stumps.

"If you spoke to Reeva, the two of you could have taken lots of other steps," Nel said.

Pistorius said he thought the perceived threat could strike at any moment.

"There was no time," he insisted.

Nel also highlighted what he said was an inconsistency in Pistorius' testimony, noting that the Olympic runner had said Steenkamp didn't scream when he shot that night but also saying he could hear very little because his ears were "ringing" from the first gunshot.

"You knew that Reeva was behind the door and you shot at her knowing that she was behind that door," Nel said.

"That's not true, my lady," Pistorius said, addressing the judge.

I might have missed this, but..............how many doors does this bathroom contain? Are there any accesses to the bathroom room other than through the door? Window etc. If there is only one door and no other accesses then I would have to say his position is shaky at best.

The diagram showed that there was a bathroom door and inside the bathroom a separate door by the actual toilet for privacy.

I just wish these murderers would "man" up and face the truth.....and consequences. Tired of people trying to get out of crimes.

Exactly !! ....I think they were arguing and that was the only safe place for her until she could escape from him...which unfortunately never happened...So sad. My guess is that she was trying to break it off with him and he went berserk on her.

His story is so full of holes. When he allegedly called out to his girlfriend why didn't he listen for her response, listen for a response when he challenged the person behind a closed bathroom door or why he fired blindly into the bathroom door and not waited for an alleged intruder to appear? All to fishy I would say.

I hate hearing Pistorius repeatedly saying, "My Lady."

It's their method in that Country, similiar to us saying your Honor in our courts. They do not have a jury so his comments will be the judge as "My Lady". If the Judge was a male, it would be "My Lord". The judge by herself will find in guilty or not-guilty

WHY did he shoot so fast and so many times? Why didn't he wait for police IF he thought that she was calling THE POLICE? Good Lord! IF I had heard someone in MY BATHROOM I would first yell out that I have a gun! Second, I would ask who it is. And third, I would NOT shoot unless they tried to come out of the bathroom. WHY was he so afraid of an intruder especially IF he had a gun in his hand?

Not that my opinion matters.....
But if you're in protection mode, how does this man not know where the love of his life is. It would be my first desire to know the whereabouts of my loved ones .....IF.....I thought there were intruders in my home.
I believe the attorney is absolutely right, he knew who was behind that door.
