UMass basketball player Gordon comes out as gay

Derrick Gordon Announces He Is Gay

AMHERST, Mass. (AP) -- UMass guard Derrick Gordon has become the first openly gay player in Division I men's basketball.

Gordon made the announcement in interviews with ESPN and Outsports on Wednesday. The sophomore was the Minutemen's fourth-leading scorer with 9.4 points per game last season, when UMass reached the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1998.

A transfer from Western Kentucky, Gordon played at high school powerhouse St. Patrick in New Jersey.

Gordon said he felt more confident to come out after seeing an NBA team sign Jason Collins, who became the league's first openly gay player when he joined the Brooklyn Nets this season.

"I want to be myself," Gordon said in the interview televised on ESPN. "I don't want to hide and be someone I'm not."

Gordon recently came out to his teammates. He said they told him: "We're going to support you no matter what."

I'm gay and I am so tired of hearing the "first gay" this or that and why are they always black gay men? Enough of this foolishness.

I personally have no opinion if a person is gay or not. I do wonder why each and everytime a person comes out as gay this requires a mutli media event??? It seems that everyone is itching for their 15 minutes of fame and we the "public" acknowledge this each and everytime.. Can we please focus on more important world events such as hunger, war or poverty...just to name a few ?????

We can't focus on these things because, although they are important to the american people, they are not important enough for the corporate run media machine. Politicians want us to focus on useless **** so they can keep their benefactors happy. Corporations want money - That's it. That's why they own your government - That's why the media loves when we focus on other unimportant ****.

Cool, but ya know, judging in general is never a good thing. Keep looking at the covers...and keep guessing.

Yeah pretty much. Most gay folks think no one knows and they are doing a great job hiding it but gay men do not act like straight men and gay women dont act like straight women and every always knows except the gay person themselves.
