UMass basketball player Gordon comes out as gay

Derrick Gordon Announces He Is Gay

AMHERST, Mass. (AP) -- UMass guard Derrick Gordon has become the first openly gay player in Division I men's basketball.

Gordon made the announcement in interviews with ESPN and Outsports on Wednesday. The sophomore was the Minutemen's fourth-leading scorer with 9.4 points per game last season, when UMass reached the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1998.

A transfer from Western Kentucky, Gordon played at high school powerhouse St. Patrick in New Jersey.

Gordon said he felt more confident to come out after seeing an NBA team sign Jason Collins, who became the league's first openly gay player when he joined the Brooklyn Nets this season.

"I want to be myself," Gordon said in the interview televised on ESPN. "I don't want to hide and be someone I'm not."

Gordon recently came out to his teammates. He said they told him: "We're going to support you no matter what."

Why do we even make this such an issue ? We should all accept each other for what we are. Whether we are male or female, black or white, plain or handsome, fat or thin, we are who we are. Aren't you happy for this young man that finally he can be who he is ?
Now just play basketball and go on and have a happy, successful life, Derrick !

I know you are all going to say "you can't judge a book by it's cover" ; but sometimes you can .

Cool, but ya know, judging in general is never a good thing. Keep looking at the covers...and keep guessing.

Yeah pretty much. Most gay folks think no one knows and they are doing a great job hiding it but gay men do not act like straight men and gay women dont act like straight women and every always knows except the gay person themselves.

Don't start crying to mommy when they start calling you names in the locker room. Second thought- They don't want you in there anyway. You're finished.

Hmm... Note they announce that he is the First in D1 Men's... That way, they leave the door open for the first D2...D3..D4... then Women's D1...D2... all for agenda sake. Does that mean he gets an asterisk next to his name in the program? * Denotes Openly Gay player. We dont care anymore...

They are good in gay sports, however. You know what I mean? Like, water sports?
