Iconic Comic Book Character Archie To Die

Iconic Comic Book Character Archie To Die

OK -- this is not the happy-go-lucky Riverdale we once knew. CNN is reporting exclusively that Archie from Archie Comics will die in an upcoming issue.

Archie and his pals Jughead, Reggie, Betty and Veronica have been gracing your grocery store checkouts and collectors' shelves since the early 1940s. They've almost always been high schoolers.

The 'Life With Archie' series explores the beloved character's future, and an issue out in July will reveal to readers how he dies.

Archie Comics CEO Jon Goldwater tells CNN ... "I think it's the natural conclusion to the 'Life With Archie' series. Archie dies as he lived -- heroically. He dies saving the life of a friend, and does it in his usual selfless way."

Goldwater wouldn't give any more details on how Archie dies, but said Archie's death should be an important reminder of how heroic the average person can be. He said he expects fans to be shocked and to grieve.

Looks like he's already right - on Twitter, reaction to the news of the new story was a resounding "no!"

The Wrap's Brent Lang asks the question we don't really want to know the answer to: who's next? Jughead?

The comics will continue to be made featuring a young Archie, but now, fans will know how Archie would one day meet his end.

As MTV notes, Archie comics have been pushing the limits in recent years with moves like introducing a gay character and starting a zombie invasion story, but this is undoubtedly the most daring yet.

Bummer. I've read Archie comic's ever since I was about 10 years old, which makes about 40 years worth. It was and is still my favorite comic book. Even though I might be an old geezer now I still like enjoy reading it once in a while. One other comic book I miss and haven't seen in many many years is "Sad Sack". The older comics are so much better than todays' mostly garbage.... Good bye Archie... I'm sure you'll make into comic book Heaven. :) :)

Comic book characters, especially clean-cut, friendly, helpful hero types are not supposed to die. Archie and his friends have always slived the good life in the fantasy town of Riverdale, and have a role model of fun-loving teens, without the violence of other comic book characters. Leave well-enough alone!

The words 'comic book' elude to the fact that it should be funny. I see nothing funny about Archie's demise :(

i believe jughead is killed as he watches archie in that threesome wth betty and veronica, thinking that archie is actually eating veronica. he pulls archie away from the girls and archie accidentlally crushes jugheads penis which causes massive blood loss.

The nice thing about comic books and the comic book "stars" is that they live on forever and ever so future generations can enjoy them as much as past generations... until some CEO has the bright idea to squelch that nice idea.

Here's a LOVELY idea to those who have any comic of Archie - when the NEXT time capsule gets made at the TOWN you live in, bring your comic with you, and submit it along with ALL the other stuff, so that future generations can learn of some people's PAST lives.
