AP president: Journalists 'under attack' worldwide

2 Journalists Covering Afghanistan Elections Shot, 1 Killed

NEW YORK (AP) - The president and CEO of The Associated Press says journalists around the world are "increasingly under attack" by people trying to influence and control the news.

Gary Pruitt spoke Monday at a news conference before a symposium focusing on some Al-Jazeera journalists imprisoned in Egypt.

Pruitt touched on the recent death of AP photojournalist Anja Niedringhaus (AHN'-yuh NEE'-dring-hows). She was killed last week in Afghanistan, and her colleague Kathy Gannon was seriously wounded. The women were covering the run-up to the country's elections.

Pruitt says the increased dangers to reporters and the growing secrecy of governments make journalists' jobs more challenging but also more important.

Egyptian authorities say the Al-Jazeera journalists engaged in terrorism-related offenses by providing a platform to the Muslim Brotherhood. Their defenders say they were doing their jobs as journalists.

I think part of the problem is that most journalists are not objective and have their own agenda. People are recognizing this and taking notice which is making them more and more a target. If you are not going to report the facts, then you make yourself a target. the news media outlets/companies are just as secretive as the government and can not be trusted.

Enough is enough with this Moslem B?S?. The Moslems are pushing more and more in the US. They came to the U S on their own just like many other foreigners. The difference tis the others are not bringing their countries traditions into the US culture. Yes the other hold on to the cultural values but don't force them for other to accept. If the want to wear burka cover their heads they should have stayed were they were. You don't see the Germans running around in leder hosen ,or scout in their kilts, etc. so why should they be allowed their dress wear over here. They should were their costumes at home or their parties but not in public. Last week I nearly ran down one saying his prayers on a bike path because it was time for prayer. They best should start compiling with the American way or just go back were they came from,.. Same goes for the people who insist speaking their mother language Learn English ,thats the language that should be spoken here and not insist your home language because you don't under stand. People than immigrated to the US before studied the new language and did not insist theirs be spoken. When I travel I don't expect the people to speak English and try to use their language if I needed something.

Yep... & CBS has failed to air a news report about Nike's horrendous working conditions in Vietnam because CBS got a big sponsorship from Nike @ the last Winter Olympics... with CBS reporters wearing jackets with the Nike Swoosh. Of course, they fired the journalist who was one of their top reporters. Then there's the whole white wash of TWA flight 800.

Not to mention the besmirching of Dan Rather's career and subsequent firing from CBS because he fronted a documentary showing how George W Bush played hookey from his assigned National Guard duty and other frat-boy style derelictions of responsibility.

Dan Rather was fired because his "documentary" was false. CBS would have given him the keys to "Black Rock" if it had been true.

Did anyone ever document the purported Jefferson Clinton's studies in England, while the draft was taking our valid boys to the meat grinder in Vietnam? I guess it is not fashionable, under a Democratic administration.

Gary Webb (Dark Alliances) , Danny Casolaro and Michael Hastings were all investigating highly sensitive subjects. Always thought Tim Russet had an "induced" heart attack too. Just my opinion.

Why is anyone surprised? Elections, tribal warfare , female photo-journalist and the Moslem view on women in the work place. As the CEO warns, there will be more and at an increaing rate. It is not a civilized Western democratic social game.

Realistically, it all boils down to who can break the news first, which is going to make the most dollars. If anyone really cared about a journalists life, they wouldn't be placed in war zones, and this includes the journalists themselves. Although its sad if a journalist dies because they are "covering" news in dangerous areas, they are not heroes for doing so and should not be lauded as such. They are curious people putting their curiosities to work for them and making much money while doing so. An unfortunate thing for journalists to lose their lives because they are in known "dead" zones.

I may be wrong, but isn't it true that when a journalist is in a violence zone, they have to be protected by a soldier? I've seen this on 20/20 and other news shows that portray "the life of journalists in war." Personally, I don't believe the tax-payers dollars should be to protect journalists who are there on "assignment" for conglomerates that make billions off of the journalists being there in the first place. Not only is it wrong, but it also puts our soldiers in dangerous situations when they have to babysit journalists. A real shame all around. This is just one person's opinion.

Just an after thought; If Gary Pruitt thinks he's stating anything new to the public, he's grandly mistaken. Common sense has told me for years that anyone who goes into these different countries that have great political upheaval, they are taking their lives into their own hands, which is what they are paid to do by the news conglomerates.

Anja Niedringhaus was German (Deutsche), idiot.

You must be a real joy to be around, when you're not busy kicking kids and dogs.
