Virginia Police Uncover Major Teenage Sexting Ring

By Collin Ruane
Newsy

Police in Virginia say they have discovered a sexting ring involving more than 100 teens across at least six counties.

WWBT reports is started when the mom of a high school student said she noticed strange activity on her daughter's Instagram account.

Early on, authorities were investigating explicit pictures of just three teenagers, but WTVR points out the the number of teens allegedly involved skyrocketed when authorities found more than 1,000 sexually explicit pictures on two Instagram accounts.

At least one of those accounts has since been taken down. So far, WRIC notes police have seized about two dozen cellphones for a forensics investigation into what police say appeared to be consensual photos.

‚Äč"There was like 13 naked girls on there. ... They came to me, and they took my phone, too. They're trying to figure out who started the page."

This major bust comes just about a month after North Carolina police investigated up to 40 different Instagram accounts across the state which allegedly shared nude photos of teenagers. (Via WSOC)

A 17-year-old was arrested and charged with cyberbullying for sharing a picture of a 15-year-old girl on one of those accounts. As for the ring in Virginia, WRIC reports police aren't expected to charge anyone underage. (Via ABC)

Charge these kids and arrest them for two weeks. Have their parents visit every day and discuss what breach of morals their kid has done. They need to understand that this is not funny...it is Wrong and immoral. It begins at home and continues in school. Kids should be forced to lock up their phones in a locker before school and these stupid kids who do this sexting should not be allowed to have their iphones or ipads, etc. Good for the rout of the baseball team. Do more.

You know, first off, taking a kids phone away when thier parent needs to reach them is stupid. With all the shootings, bomb threats, and other dumb things we have to deal with, if i knew my kid had a phone i bought him and he wasn't loud to have it durring school hours and something happened i would be beside my side not knowing if he was ok. Second of all, jail for two weeks is seriously extreme. You might hate kids and have a mean streak in you, but there is a better way to handle this. Perhaps a better technology that better suits underage people by limiting pictures or social media. two weeks in jail would make thier lives equally as bad as having the permant record on thier shoulders. Just becasue the news out lets create a new moral, doesn't mean you need to jump on the band wagon and sing its praises. These rules are made to protect the people that are too young to engage in these activities, they are not made because it has simply been decdied that taking these pictures is now a sin against society and God. There is another way to deal with this. We just need to find it.

Give them the phones that only allow emergency calls and calls to home, parents' work, etc. There are cheap programmable ones that can only be used to call the numbers programmed in them. Then they would have phones for emergencies, but would maybe be paying attention in class and not using phones to text each other for the answers on exams, or taking dirty pictures. It would definitely take care of the sexting and texting while driving problem.

I would love to see all the cellphones from all these people pointing fingers and see what they have for pictures and texts. I bet there would be a lot of them going to jail

Teen agers being teenagers! Do I condone their activity? NOOOOOOOOO !!!!!!!!!
Some people will not learn something untill they get burned BIG TIME.
I dont know what the answer is.. The ones that usualy get hurt the most are the girls. As a parent, you might try talking to your girls, explain to them that anything that goes into the airways will find a home on the web. Flat out tell your girls that that nakid pcture they are thinking about sending their so called boy friend can easly come back time, after time, to torment them .

Teens + Raging Hormones = Sexting. Just show the girls pictures of known adult perverts who could be looking at their naked pictures, and give them the details of what goes on while those particular perverts are looking.

really??? OK its not right but if they didn't have cells they would have used cameras - just with cell phones and now its easier. and bullying well your going to have it regardless cause parents don't monitor their kids like they used to - kids now a days have tooooo much freedom and parents have become LAZY and hence they get away with a lot of stuff - I say F* the child abuse stuff bring back the belt! Put some of these kids back in their place. BULLIES especially! Kids should have cell phones anyone until they are responsible adults!

not so much that kids have changed over the years, just the technology has given them far more opportunity to share it - TMI

You are a full blown idiot who has no basis in reality. If it were not for SEX outside marriage, MOST of your religious/conservitave "heroes" would not even be here. Let me let you in on a little secret.......in your "older days" people still had sex w/o being married, had sex as teenagers, homosexuals had sex and yes even your parents not only had SEX but talked dirty to each other and probably would have sent nude pics to each other but the technology was just not good enough in the "older days". Kids today are doing the same things kids did when you were young. It's just that they do it in different ways AND we are ableto hear about these things sooner and easier than ever before. In the "older days" orgies and sex parties still happened and teenagers got caught being naked and having sex but WE didn't hear about it cause we did not have the internet to spread all these dumb, useless stories around. New year......Same old people. We haven't changed in thousands of years! Get over yourself!! Maybe YOU are ashamed of your naked body but A LOT of people aren't and they shouldn't be. Heck, when you get to heaven you're going be surprised at all the naked people around you having SEX.................why do you think they call it Heaven?!?!?!

I find it a bit ironic that AOL puts this article on this page, and to the right of the article I see links to several articles that boastfully feature various celebrities in tiny bikinis. Where do you think these kids get the dopey idea to send out their nude photos from?

Strange comments in this thread. How about, instead of being some weirdo authoritarian, letting kids have the phones and teach them to use it responsibly?

"This is a cell phone. It can be of great advantage to you, but it can also do a lot of harm if misused. There are countless examples of people ruining their lives by doing stupid things with cell phones ..."

Is that so hard?
