Pro-Russians storm Ukraine government buildings

KIEV, Ukraine (AP) - Crowds of pro-Russian demonstrators stormed government buildings Sunday in two major cities in eastern Ukraine, where secessionist sentiment has sparked frequent protests since Ukraine's Russia-friendly president was ousted in February.

In Luhansk, 30 kilometers (20 miles) west of the Russian border, hundreds of people surrounded the local headquarters of the security service and later scaled the facade to plant a Russian flag on the roof.

In Donetsk, to the southwest, a large group of people surged into the provincial government building and smashed windows. A gathering of several hundred, many of them waving Russian flags, then listened to speeches delivered from a balcony emblazoned with a banner reading "Donetsk Republic."

Eastern Ukraine was the heartland of support for Viktor Yanukovych, the president who fled to Russia in February after months of protests. About half of the region's residents are ethnic Russians, many of whom believe Ukraine's acting authorities are Ukrainian nationalists who will oppress Russians.

Ukraine's interim authorities deny they are infringing the rights of the ethnic Russian population and accuse Moscow of trying to sow instability. Russia has moved large contingents of troops to areas near the Ukrainian border, and speculation is strong that unrest in eastern Ukraine could be used as a pretext for a Russian incursion.

Since Crimea held a referendum to secede and then was annexed by Russia in March, calls for similar referenda in Ukraine's east have emerged.

On Saturday, Ukraine's security service said it had detained a 15-strong armed gang planning to seize power in Luhansk province.

The Security Service of Ukraine said it seized 300 machine guns, an antitank grenade launcher, a large number of grenades, five handguns and firebombs.

It said the group intended to mount a grab for power. No names or additional details were provided.

Also Sunday, authorities in Ukraine said they found the body of a kidnapped journalist who played an active role in protests that led to Yanukovych's ouster. The body was found in a forest about 150 kilometers (60 miles) outside the capital, Kiev.

Cherkassk province prosecutors said Vasily Sergiyenko was abducted in his home city of Korsun-Shevchenkivskyi on Friday evening and later murdered. The nationalist Svoboda party, of which Sergiyenko was a member, said the reporter was found with stab wounds and signs of beatings to his head and knees.

The U.S. should be calling for similar referendums in the Asiatic provinces within Russia itself, where ethnic Russians are in a clear minority. I don't think Czar Ivan the 5th would be too keen on that!

Sorry. But the countries that you mention are happy to be part of the Russian Federation. They live in a tough neighborhood. They are happy to have Russian protection. In case you missed it, the Berlin Wall is no more. There are Russian citizens living happily in Seatle and in Napa Valley and in Hollywood and all over the United States. They come and go as they please.

This is the first almost bipartisan report I've read on any US news source. Its never told that Yanukovich was elected by a similar margin as Obama against Romney. Ukraine is politically and regionally divided. When Russia began a $15 billion aid package to Ukraine, and slashed the price of natural gas, they did the EXACT same things we do to encourage governments around the world to side with us. But, as we now borrow money from China to give to Ukraine, we say we do it for the best reasons, while Russia was using economic terrorism to control Ukraine?

Putin may not admit this, but I think he wants the entire Ukraine. Right now, he is just using the rhetorics of protecting Russian speaking population. Well, isn't Ukraine a country of Russian speaking population? He wants to discourage those Ukrainian-Russian speaking population from joining with the western European Union, either POLITICALLY and/or ECONOMICALLY. Because if Ukraine joins the European Union, the joint-venture will allow Ukraine to grow prosperously, maybe even strengthen Ukraine's military forces, and that I think why Putin is desperately trying to avoid. Of course, this is just my my impressions of Putin. He is a smart cookie, you know.

Putin was the head of the KGB, Putin is still the head of the KGB, this time with more power and money. If the people in the U S S R forgot what life was like under the dictators of there past then they deserve what is coming there way, Isolation from the rest of the world. Once a communist always a communist. Putin is a danger to his people and the world!! We must keep our eye's on him like a hawk and give him no slack to get away with his bullying tactics!!!

This new article reinforces that Pandora's Box was opened some months ago. One second ago is now History... The Saakasvilli situation with Mr. Putin at the Olympics in China, , John McCain group travellling to many areas of question, Victor Yankovich (past President of Ukraine), Gaddafi (Libya), President Lincoln hanging (forced through politics; having the largest hanging at one time) 38 Sioux Indians in 1862, shooting down the Koren Airliner by the USSR about 20 years ago, marching orders from Riyadh, Saddam Hussein, Noriega (Panama), Somoza (Nicaragua), and the list goes on literally forever of past happenings..........

At the moment there is so much material available worldwide to bring about a Catastrophic False Flag Happening", a WWWIII could literally happen at any moment! Gated Communities of the Ultra Rich will be nothing more than what normal housing would become. - There are extremely capable Leaders that can come together....... But until all the Special Interest Groups are held back.........World Leaders and their competent assistants will never be able to speak with each other.......Good Luck to all...

Putin is no more than a hidden "KGB" field officer (hmmmm! He was before the collapse of the Soviet Union, huh?) who still believes in the old Communist propaganda? He knows that if he sows mistrust in the people of the former Soviet Union, to also include his own countrymen, that he will then get the green light to "restore the dignity of the Party."

It doesn't take a brain surgeon or a genius to see that one coming.

It only take for those good people to do nothing while evil triumphs, and if you don’t think that communism or the power of Putin isn’t evil, then you have been living in a glass bubble and know nothing about history.

KGB or FSB. Blood in Blood out. You can take the Russian out of the KGB/FSB but you can't take the KGB/FSB out of the Russian.

Very well organized for a pro Russian group...i'm guessing Putin is behind this...Just like he was behind assisting the snipers that shot protesters in Kiev.

All the great things are simple, and many can be expressed in a single word: freedom, justice, honor, duty, mercy, hope

The Soviets offer none of the above...

Freedom to the Ukraine.... Freedom for its people

Americans are very aware that Freedom can, and often does, comes at the cost of blood shed.
