Flash flooding kills 14 on South Pacific island

Solomon Islands South Pacific

HONIARA, Solomon Islands (AP) - Flash floods in the Solomon Islands have killed 14 people and left thousands more homeless, authorities said Saturday.

The death toll could rise further, with many people listed as missing, said government spokesman George Herming. As many as 15,000 people have had their homes destroyed or made uninhabitable, he said.

The South Pacific island nation is home to 600,000 people.

There were several days of rain before the Mataniko River in the capital, Honiara, burst its banks Thursday and flooded low-lying settlements alongside the river.

The flooding continued through Friday, and waters began to gradually recede Saturday, Herming said.

New Zealand's government has pledged 300,000 New Zealand dollars ($258,000) to the relief effort.

Love can hold us up, but hate can take us down. I'd like to think that we are better than the kinds of things I'm seeing. People may not like our government, but that doesn't mean they don't respect the American people.

I sailed through there last year, these are some of the most unspoiled islands in the world, and while poverty does exist, the people are a very happy and a proud lot.

My heart goes o. all in the Solomon Island who have lost loved ones or have suffered as a result of his flood.

These are very poor islanders, and older Americans will remember the terrible fighting there during World War II (i.e., Guadalcanal).

Where is the outrage from the story in Detroit about the white man who struck a child who jumped in front of his truck , did the right thing by getting out of his vehicle to check on the child and was beaten almost to death by 6 low life blacks hanging out in front of a liquor store and then robbed. How many times has it been said if the roles reversed this would be a national headline story. I am sick of this and believe it is time to turn the tables here. Again ,big dispute over whether this was a racially motivated hate crime. It never is with black on white violence..just the other way around. Time to stand our ground and not take this crap anymore. Holder and Obama have created this environment and we must not stand for it. Don't be sheep, be wolves!
