ATM Spits Out $37K To Homeless Man

ATM Spits Out $37K To Homeless Man

You go to the ATM and pull out $100 -- but it doesn't stop there; it just keeps spitting out bills until finally you've got more than $30 grand. Sounds like a dream, huh? Well, it happened in Maine to one very, very lucky homeless man.

Now, the man, whose name hasn't been released, was already on South Portland police's radar as he was caught sleeping next to a TD ATM at about 1 a.m. When police arrived, they just told him to move it along.

But Bangor Daily News reported police said just a few hours later, "We got another call that he was back there and taking an unusually long time at the ATM by a woman who was trying to use it. She thought it seemed suspicious."

When they arrived on the scene, the man was shoveling cash into a shopping bag.

The man was using his own bank card to withdraw cash using the "cash advance" feature. According to WGME, he reportedly made more than 50 withdraws before police intervened. The ATM should have cut him off but apparently didn't because of a code error.

The money was returned to the bank, and there will reportedly be no charges filed against the man.

To those who did not read the story. He was using his own atm card, and using the cash advance feature on his account.

Same thing happened to Jack Tripper (John Ritter) on Three's Company one episode. I can't remember how it all turned out. I think they prolly blew at the Regal Begal. I just remember Jack freaking out, cash was shooting out everwhere. : )

Here is another case where he should know it is a mistake. there were cameras there and they would have found him sooner or later. I am surprized that one of those machines ever holds that much.

That's what I thought.......most ATM's you can only withdraw $200 at a time. I assume for safety reasons, in case someone steals your card.

They actually have lots more, this one had a malfunction. What is quetionable is wheter or not he actually had that much in his account. This site being what it is that may very well be the case especially since "The money was returned to the bank, and there will reportedly be no charges filed against the man."

You're absolutely right. And the bank should let him keep a few bucks for a good meal for bringing the mistake to everyone's attention. I'd like one of THOSE credit cards.

How is it misleading. The ATM did spit out the money due to bank error. What do you think the headline should say? "Impatient woman calls police"

There was NO spitting of any kind here, machines do not spit, that be incorrect terminology. Please do every 1 a huge service and use correct wordage.

The guy wasn't too bright. The bank knew who he was, had him on camera using his own card. There's no point in taking out thousands of dollars that don't belong to you. An "error" like that does not entitle you to keep the money.

if he was talented enough he could have talked the lady into leaving, perhaps sending her out on a shot shopping chore with one of the 100 dollar bills.
