University professor attacked with pepper spray during a lecture

Well-Known Professor Pepper Sprayed During Lecture

A George Mason University professor was attacked with pepper spray during a lecture Wednesday afternoon at the Arlington campus.

The man who hit the professor with pepper spray during his lecture Wednesday has been identified as Jonathan Pendleton. It turns out he is not even a student at the school.

The suspect, Jonathan Pendleton, was apparenty attempting to make a citizen's arrest. Pendleton is facing serious charges - abduction and assault. He'll get a hearing next month.

WUSA reports Pendleton jumped on a desk, sprayed Cowen and then started chasing him before an off-duty officer subdued him.

According to The Washington Post, a student tried to intervene, but Pendleton hit the student with a stun gun.

Professor Cowen is a popular economist and blogger.

According to some reports, a 'Jonathan Pendleton' commented on the blog earlier this month, saying that he would arrest Cowen if police and the FBI did not.

While Cowen sustained only minor injuries, as WRC-TV reports, several students were affected by the pepper spray.

"Medics had to treat 15 people, including Cowen. No one was seriously hurt but students were sent home for the day."

Strangely enough, Cowen was, at the time of the attack, teaching a class about vigilantism. There is a stronger police presence campus post-attack.

Welcome to modern journalism. Here's a "factoid". Wow. Double WOW! Isn't that - Amazing, Unbelievable, Astonishing, Horrible (take your pick). No real information but it gives them something to put online and gives us something to click on.

it's interesting to those who are affiliated w/ a university bc there is a huge debate on whether to allow students & profs to pack on campuses. Most of us don't want anyone packing on a campus bc it is a learning environment

So....what was the guy's problem with the professor? Did he not like his politics, his teaching subject, his sweater? What? Good writing means that you actually inform the reader what the story is all about. The reason, motive, agenda, is a big part of the story.

How about a little more detail, please? Was it personal, political etc...left me wondering about why this was even posted. Thanks

We learned nothing from the article. What a poorly written story.

Pretty ambiguous reporting at best, but Huffington reports are like that when they feel the truth must not be known yet they must report.

Perhaps they don't tell us what Pendelton's issue was because it might be libelous to repeat it. Maybe he thought the professor was too "dumb" to teach.

There's a critical issue here in regards to protection. Any teacher is hired to do a job for the community/college/state. As such, they are put in front of a class, in part, as representatives of whoever is paying them. When a total stranger finds their way into the school, then attacks an unarmed school official, there is more than a mere security problem. 15 people were affected by these actions, innocent people who attended a school under the assumption that they were safe. Parents attacking teachers is a bullying problem in schools that goes unaddressed. We take these things on a case-by-case basis but there is no example set, and as happens with most laws, when the punishment no longer deters the crime, the punishment must be more severe.
