Yep, on "American Idol," Harry Connick, Jr., was egging Jennifer Lopez on to do a hair flip during a critique ... and JLo wasn't feeling it ... so, she dropped an f-bomb ... but it got edited out. Ironically, she was telling contestant Jena Irene to be messier on stage.

Hollywood Life loved the star's reaction -- but cursed the censors for censoring the curse.

"Laughing, but feeling teased, she may have replied to her fellow male judges with a hearty 'f*** you,' or maybe an 'f*** off' - who knows! Let your imagination run wild! Because unfortunately for our drama-loving (and swear word-loving) hearts, the camera guys were as quick to cut away as the censors were to bleep her."

Still, Gossip Cop called it "pretty funny."
