Doctors to suspend patients between life and death

Doctors To Suspend Patients Between Life And Death
From "Flatliners" to "Frankenstein", the idea of dying and being brought back to life has always existed in movies. But it might soon become a reality.

Through a process called suspended animation, doctors could put patients in a state of suspension between life and death. It would give doctors more time to fix life-threatening injuries, Gawker reports.

Gizmodo explains how it works. All the patient's blood is quickly removed from his or her body and replaced with saline solution, which slows down cellular activity. Doctors then have about two hours to fix the injuries and replace the saline with blood. The patient's heart should start up again with or without some help.

So patients are technically dead during that time. The FDA gave doctors at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh the OK to perform the procedure, but only on patients who are extremely likely to die from their injuries, such as gunshot wounds.

The Verge reports this procedure was tested on pigs in 2002 and some survived. But suspended animation is more controversial on humans because there wouldn't be enough time to get consent from the patients or their family.

New Scientist describes it as a "groundbreaking emergency technique" and says it will be tested initially on ten patients. Those patients will then be compared to other patients who did not receive the procedure.

this short article does not address the question of what parameters are applied to consider them "dead". Is brain wave activity halted, etc.

They are not brain dead, but critically injured and the doctors need more time to fix them up. e.g. a shotgun blast to the gut. So it's suspended animation.

So .... ironic....since if it does work....do you think you will be able to afford it or the gov pay for it??? Really?

I say try it. Without research, we would never have the many
remarkable things that medicine has for us today.

All the people that claim that doctors play God with procedures such as this one, remind me of a story someone told me once, i dont remember it exactly so i'll make it up as i remember: "in a small town there was a great storm, almost everyone listened to the warning that the town would be flooding and vacated the town. Except Billy, when his family asked why he wouldnt leave, he stated "I dont have to leave because God will save me" and so his family left, the storm came and flooded the town, Billy got on his roof and the storm continued. Rescuers on boats went looking for those who needed help, they came upon Billy and offered to take him to safety but he refused, saying "No i will be ok because God will save me". And so the rescuers moved on looking for those who needed their help. The storm got worse and the only one left on his roof was Billy, his best friend risking his life, got on a boat and went to get Billy, however Billy against stated "no i will be fine because God will save me." His best friend had no choice but get himself back to safety. And so Billy stayed on his roof and died. When he got to heaven he met God and asked "God why didn't you go to save me?" God responded "Billy i tried to save you by sending a warning but you ignored it, i sent your family, rescuers, even your best friend to save you but you refused to accept my help" .... The END. Now back to the comment... why do you see a medical procedure such as this one , as a doctor playing God? could it be that these doctors are not playing God but instead that God sent them and gave them the knowledge as his form of saving us? These doctors are saving lives with medical procedures not ending them.
