Three elephants get loose at St. Louis circus

Three Elephants Get Loose At St. Louis Circus

What's the obvious thing to do when you see elephants loose in a parking lot? Pull out your camera phone and record it. What else?

At a multi-purpose arena, right outside of St. Louis, three elephants escaped from their handlers Saturday and proceeded to raid the parking lot, damaging some vehicles. Fortunately no one was hurt.

According to KSDK the parking lot was mostly empty when the elephants got loose and the 2 ton animals really just bumped into some cars which obviously caused some damage.

Reportedly, the animals were spooked by some loud noises and then started running.

The elephant handlers are from the Shriners Circus who didn't have much to say in the way of explaining what happened. "The elephants were loose on the parking lot for a brief period. ... And they are resting comfortably at this time. That's the only statement I have."

The elephants only roamed the private parking lot where employees from the venue and the circus parked their cars and that's when they damaged the venue's loading door.

As for the show, it went on. The elephants were given a break Saturday night but got back to work Sunday morning.

See my post a few up from yours. While I'm not one of the PETA fanatics throwing blood on people wearing fur, I do care deeply for intelligent animals taken out of their natural environments and forced to work in circuses and animal shows, including Sea World which is in some real hot water right now over these issues. I would also like to see people in the western world (I don't hold out a lot of hope for third world nations, nor for Kim & Kanye) utterly horrified at even the idea of killing an animal for its skin! As I said in my post, elephants are intelligent, sensitive animals. We're just starting to realize how intelligent. The phrase "An elephant never forgets" isn't an old wive's tale. If you want to see this in action, watch this YouTube video (and have your tissues handy): "Shirley and Jenny: Two Elephants Reunited After More Than 20 Years" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lF8em4uPdCg

AOL headline said "Video that may make you gasp!" So where's the video? All I saw were a couple of quick shots...not a bunch of elephants roaming around. Big hype, as usual.

Like dolphins, orcas and many other animals, elephants are another animal that shouldn't be taken out of their natural environments and forced to work in circuses and animal shows. They are intelligent, sensitive animals and they're not given a say in whether this is something they enjoy doing or not. Chances are, not. They're often subjected to cruel training techniques and punished if they don't learn quickly. Think twice before patronizing a circus or animal show that includes elephants, apes, chimpanzees and even big cats like lions and tigers. Or is it that animal slavery is OK a lesson you want to teach your children?

Elephants, for the matter and all animals do not belong in a circus for human entainment. Shame on mankind for removing elephants from their natural habitats.

AMEN Art!! Ever seen Lion Ark?? Now that is a powerful film about the rescue of abused and neglected lions from Bolivia circuses.....All circuses are nothing except to exploit animals for the pure pleasure of human entertainment!!

Whatever city, town, suburb, etc. work to help save these remarkably intelligent, endangered animals. They do not deserve to be trucked across our highways for miles and hours of arduous travel in hot box trucks, chained and unable to move about. Standing in the own excrement where they eat. For what? So we can say to our kids "look honey, there's a real elephant!" Let's teach them respect for life, in keeping with ones own habitat. They need our protection not our exploitation. Stop Shiners and people like them, they care for nothing but making money off them! Please help them, if they come to a YOUR town say NO! They belong in sanctuaries where they can roam with their own kind. Check out Animal Defenders Website. Thank you!

Well said. I don't go to any zoo or any circus and haven't for many years
What I see is animal cruelty, taking those poor helpless out of their natural habitat!
Where is PETA?
