Florida police officer, two others shot dead

Tiger Woods Announces Indefinite Break From Golf

WINDERMERE, Fla. (AP) -- A police officer was shot and killed early Saturday after stopping two people and calling for help in an Orlando suburb, authorities said.

Windermere Police Department Officer Robert German called for backup after stopping a young man and woman on foot shortly before 4 a.m., investigators said.

German, 31, reported his location and was found lying on the ground when a deputy arrived at the scene, Orange County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Jane Watrel said.

"He just said he was doing a subject stop and then all the tragic events unfolded," Watrel said.

The deputy put German in his squad car and rushed him to the fire department. German was then taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

As officers responded to the scene, they heard shots fired and found two individuals deceased nearby matching the description of the man and woman German had stopped, Watrel said. They are believed to have committed suicide.

Their identities have not been released.

Windermere is located 15 miles west of Orlando. It has a population of about 3,000 people and one of the lowest crime rates in Florida, Mayor Gary Bruhn said. He said it was the first line-of-duty death in the town's history.

"Violent crime is just not something that happens in the town of Windermere," Bruhn said. "So it's really, really difficult."

German had been with the department for five years and just recently returned from desk duty after falling and injuring his shoulder, Bruhn said.

"He loved working as a police officer and he loved working at Windermere," Bruhn said.

The investigation is ongoing.

The mystery should be solved soon as Officer German, like other Windermere officers was equipped with a body camera.
You can find more details by way of this article which is under the video: http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/local/breakingnews/os-windermere-police-officer-shot-20140322,0,4809261.story
and read what an outstanding, upstanding and noble office, family man and citizen Mr. German was.

TU for the info. There was more info in that article. The mention that there was a break in or robbery a mile away would explain why he was suspicious. Unfortunately, he was alone, and this new information makes me feel there was even more reason to wait for the other officers. I still don't know how they're sure it's a murder/suicide. Would someone shoot an officer, run away and then decide to kill themselves? You're right, though, if his camera was working we should have more answers soon.

The murder of Officer German is a horrible tragedy, and he, his family and loved ones are in my thoughts. I read the story a couple of times and I'm still having a little trouble piecing together the chain of events. I think this story could use some better writing and editing.

Usually, nothing good happens after midnight. That's what I always told the kids.

I always told my son that after 1 AM the percentage of guns on the street is much higher than it is prior to 1 AM. Most good kids are hoe by 1 AM

Nonsense. Weren't you ever a teenager? Plenty of fun and certainly not criminal things happen after 4 AM. Our parents did not like it, of course not, but it doesn't mean it was dangerous in any way. Criminal activity is something entirely different.

Your parents allowed you to be out at 4 AM as a teenager?

I was NEVER allowed out at 4 a.m. and neither were my kids. You also have to realize it's a much different time now than it was then.

Most of the police I know think there are too many "illegal" guns out there..and not enough police..cut-backs, cut-backs, cut-backs...

Did the officer draw his weapon? Did the man and woman overpower him and take his weapon or did they have one themselves? Were the shots heard by the responding officers as they fired them or did they come from the weapon belonging to the two?

What a crazy country this has become. Condolences to the family of the officer. So much senseless killing going on anymore.
