New 'Star Wars' set 30 years after 'Jedi'

New Star Wars Movie Set 30 Years After Return of the Jedi
- Mar. 19, 2014 1:49 AM EDT

LOS ANGELES (AP) - The new "Star Wars" has an official timeline and one confirmed returning character: robot R2-D2.

Director J.J. Abrams will begin shooting in May on "Star Wars: Episode VII," which is set three decades after 1983's "Return of the Jedi," Disney CEO Bob Iger said Tuesday.

Speaking at the company's annual shareholder's meeting in Portland, Ore., Iger said the movie would feature "some very familiar faces along with a trio of new, young leads." Abrams has a penchant for secrecy, and Iger said R2-D2 was the only "official cast member" he would announce.

"Episode VII" is set for release in December 2015.

Iger also said Pixar plans a third "Cars" movie and a sequel to 2004's "The Incredibles."

How many days to hit $1B in gross receipts?
Presumably to be released in 35MM, Imax and 3d.

I will try to wait, though it will be very difficult! Thanks Disney for continuing this timeless epic saga of one family's struggle for independence and quality of life in the lands far, far away!

I would love to see a well acted villainess character in the new Star Wars picture.

If we're going 30 years after Return of the Jedi, then we're right around the middle to the end of The Yuuzhan Vong War which would be SUPER SWEET if they do the next three movies on this. So much happens and it focuses on the solo and skywalker kids, shows some of the old faces, introduces new ones and TONS of shockers in that story arc. I won’t spoil for anyone. If you get a chance read the books of that deal with the The Yuuzhan Vong War, GREAT story.

You assume that Disney and J.J. Abrams are going to use the timeline and stories from a series of pulp novels? i wouldn't count on that.

Don't get your hopes up. There's a high chance very little, if anything, from the Expanded Universe would be used in the movies.

As a long time fan, follower of the saga I hope decisions are made with the original crew and brand new actors and actresses just as the first original film did. This will add the spice and fantasy of the story to new levels. I am certain that up and coming actors and actresses will and could make pretty amazing characters for this new episode. Just saying...

Whether loved or hated, this new series will most certainly reach the list of highest grossing films of all time. I hope it earns such a title, while remaining true to the fans.
