SAN DIEGO ZOO'S NEW BABY GORILLA HAS PNEUMONIA

Baby Gorilla Critical with Pneumonia in US

SAN DIEGO (AP) -- A baby gorilla delivered by a rare emergency cesarean section last week at the San Diego Zoo has pneumonia and is under constant veterinary care.

Veterinarian Nadine Lamberski worked with the baby all weekend. She said Monday that the gorilla probably contracted the pneumonia during Friday's birth, when a surgical team also had to fix a collapsed lung.

The mother gorilla, an 18-year-old named Imani, had never given birth. The zoo says the C-section, rare for a gorilla, was performed because she was in distress after going into labor.

The medical team included vets and two doctors who usually work on humans: a neonatal specialist and an anesthesiologist.

That is not necessarily true, kurz5. Since the baby is sick, the mother might kill it. Even if the baby was not sick, the mother might not know how to take care of it because she never had a baby before and needs to be shown how.

My only comment to the whiner who thinks all this care is irrelevant when "millions of humans in the U.S. have little or no health care" .... what makes you think you're so much more special than this wee one? If the millions who have no health care would get a job they just might be able to have insurance. Or if we stop giving it to those who are here illegally and give it to those who are ... they just hight have insurance. Or, are they the same? Nope .. that's right .. if you're here illegally, you get everything paid for! Let this baby gorilla alone and go pick on someone your own size!

Not everyone has a job that pays well enough to AFFORD insurance! Far too many people are working at jobs that barely pay enough to cover ramen and rent, much less health care! If the wage scale kept up with the inflation rate, then minimum wage would equate a LIVING WAGE. Instead, you've got people who are busting their butts working not just one, but sometimes TWO minimum-wage jobs because all the good-paying manufacturing jobs or other decent employment got outsourced to other countries, leaving nothing behind but McJobs! Many of these people have no choice but to apply for Medicaid, food stamps, and other aid because their jobs just don't pay enough!

Don't be so quick to disparage those who need aid until you've spent a YEAR in their shoes!
