News helicopter crashes near Space Needle

News Helicopter Crashes And Burns In Seattle; 2 Reported Dead

SEATTLE (AP) - Two people were killed when a news helicopter for KOMO-TV crashed outside its station near the Seattle Space Needle, sending clouds of black smoke over the city during the morning rush hour.

The Seattle Fire Department said in addition to the fatalities, a 37-year-old man who managed to free himself from a car at the accident scene was taken to Harborview Medical Center in critical condition. No other details were immediately available.

The station says the copter was apparently lifting off from its rooftop Tuesday morning when it possibly hit the side of the building and went down, hitting several vehicles on Broad Street.

The copter and cars exploded in flames.

Plumes of black smoke rose from the crash scene as rescue vehicles converged on the area.

Being from The Greater Seattle area, I can tell you that since all Seattle local TV stations are in close proximinty of each other. All are feeling the loss of "family" . Most of us here have seen the helicopters take off and land many, many times and hardly made notice of it. This is dangerous given that people are always around here. My heart goes out to the families and friends of the pilot and cameraman that were on board. Also pray for the the young man taken to the hosiptal that crawled out of the red car!

I love Seattle and my daughter lived there for over a year and is planning on going back. What a horrible accident. My thoughts are with all the victims and the injured.

My thoughts go out to the families of the pilot and reporter. These men were outstanding at what they did. I am willing to bet that when investigation is done....they will find tranny/gear box or shaft that controls the rotor failed.

We used to live in Seattle, and we are familiar where the Space Needle is. It's sad. It's terrible how ignorant some people can be during a situation where loss of life has just occurred. It just shows how your upbringing was crude or just plain idiotic. Some day you'll grow up and have feelings.

To see what's wrong with this country, all you have to do is read the heartless comments in this thread made by people who likely have little or no brains. When you are confronted with death we'll see how courageous you are!

What is hard to accept is that we live in an all about me world If it doesnt directly affect a person, they could care less about their fellow man or woman, the horrors of this world dont seem to matter to them at all. We have transformed ourselves into a society that ,having a lying president is cool, stealing is great as long as you dont get caught. and last but surely not least ,no matter what happens to you in your life that is bad, blame a white person, unless of course you are white, then stand against your own race to defend another race. Sad times have come home to american, yes rev wright ,the chickens have come home to roost.

Judging by your comments, you lack empathy for others.
