Auburn hires Bruce Pearl as basketball coach

Bruce Pearl Headed To Auburn

AUBURN, Ala. (AP) -- New Auburn coach Bruce Pearl wasted no time making an impression.

The former Tennessee coach sprung for pizza for several hundred students Tuesday a few hours after arriving in town, some of whom took selfies posing next to him. Then he told a couple thousand fans at Auburn Arena: "We're fixing to get Auburn into that position where we'll be going to the NCAA tournament."

The Tigers turned to Pearl Tuesday to revive a struggling basketball program that hasn't been to the NCAA tournament in more than a decade. Athletic director Jay Jacobs landed his top target with a 6-year deal worth $2.2 million annually less than a week after firing Tony Barbee.

Pearl remains under a show-cause penalty from the NCAA barring him from recruiting until Aug. 23.

Glad to hear this. Bruce is a great coach and will bring Auburn back. I started paying attention to him when he was an assistant at Iowa. He got in trouble with the Chicago reporters when he reported a player that was being paid to switch from Iowa to Illinois. The player got money and a car and Bruce wrongly got the blame by the media.

Bruce caused a big stink because the player changed his mind and went to Illinois. Your opinion about the player getting money and a car don't match the facts. Pearl went on and broke rules and was punished. Time will tell if he sticks by his own version of rules...

Wrong Bob When Bruce was a coach at Iowa he told his staff that he had a lock on this five star kid out of Chicago. Deon Thomas told Bruce that I'm going to Illinois. This 17 teen year old went to go play in an all star tour in Germany. Bruce said, if you , Iowa give me a chance to go to Germany for this two week tour, I know I could land him! It will just cost you 30,000 dollars or so. Iowa ante it up. After many face to face talks in Germany, Deon still said NO!. Bruce had to justify this trip. He called the 17 year-old (ie) minor on the phone and taped the conversation in a foriegn counry. (Bruce) Well , so ILLINOIS offer you a Chevy Blazer and CASH ? (Deon) Yeah whatever , stop callin me. Bruce said HA HA if I can't land this recruit who committed to ILLINOIS and justify that 30K I blew. I will turn them in to the NCAA.

The NCAA conducted their investagatioin and found that the UI did not violete any of laws and/or bylaws of NCAA. Yet they imposed sanctions on them. For they ( NCAA) felt that the school had "Violeted the sprit of the rules".
