Indianapolis Colts owner arrested for DWI

Jim Irsay Arrested

CARMEL, Ind. (AP) - Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay has been arrested on suspicion of drunken driving, authorities said Monday.

Irsay was arrested Sunday night in the northern Indianapolis suburb of Carmel on preliminary charges of driving while intoxicated and possession of a controlled substance, Hamilton County Sheriff's Department Deputy Bryant Orem said.

Irsay, 54, is being held at the Noblesville jail under $22,500 bond, Orem said.

Carmel police Lt. Joe Bickel said he couldn't immediately release details about the arrest because he was still gathering information.

Irsay, who lives in Carmel, became the Colts owner in 1997 after the death of his father, Robert Irsay.

Myra Borshoff Cook, a spokeswoman for Irsay, declined to comment early Monday on his arrest.

Irsay acknowledged in 2002 that he had become dependent on painkillers after several years of orthopedic operations but said he had overcome the problem after undergoing treatment.

Marion County prosecutors said the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration investigated how Irsay obtained the painkillers. Federal authorities wouldn't confirm any investigation was taking place. Prosecutors at the time said they saw no reason to charge Irsay.

A plastic surgeon who wrote painkiller prescriptions for Irsay later surrendered his federal permit to prescribe narcotic drugs.

Forbes magazine estimated Irsay's net worth at $1.6 billion.

Sad he would jeopardize the lives of others by driving under the influence. If his age is shown correctly, he sure looks much older. Certainly doesn't help the team with influencing players to act responsibly in their communities.

Yes he does, that's because, he has never quit using illegal drugs. A person of his nature, needs to be thrown in jail & have the key thrown away. He'll never get what he deserves b/c of who he is.Let a person in the inner city do that, they'd get arrested, put in jail & have a $100,000 bond. There is in justice for creeps like this fool.
Can any one say Affluence, that's bs. Throw the druggie in jail & keep his druugie arse there to rot.

Just a reminder alcoholism does not discriminate. It hits all levels of our society. Here is a guy who is educated and well off, but fails to show good judgement because of drugs, ( yes alcohol is a drug , and the most dangerous drug of choice known. You can die from withdrawls off of alcohol, unlike the other drugs, even heroin .).
He now will take the walk some of us have had to take. It is up to him and him alone to wake up and alter his behaivor. Which ,in almost all cases like this, is the realization that you can never have another drink in your life. And which is usually a long road of denial and more bad times.
Good luck dude!! Hope you make it without killing yourself or someone else in your car zoned out on alcohol.

He is no better than anyone else. Congratulations goes to the Carmel police officers who arrested him. Not a good example for all of us Colts fans.
