Dog saves Ohio homeowners from house fire

Dog Saves Ohio Homeowners from House Fire

A husband and wife survived a fire thanks to their heroic dog.

John Abney and his wife rescued 3-year-old Malaki from the SPCA three years ago, and on Thursday night, when their lives were on the line, the boxer-lab mix repaid the favor.

'He's been about the best dog I could have ever asked for. He's been really loyal, he's always watched out for me and my wife, especially last night. He's my guardian angel,' John said.

The Abneys were sound asleep as flames engulfed their home, and they only made it out because Malaki sounded the alarm. 'Normally he'll sleep through the night quiet and sound, and last night there was something definitely wrong, and he made sure we knew that.'

Malaki was crying and barking, so John got up and opened his bedroom door. 'I looked around the corner and my living room was just a giant circle of fire.'

John and his wife managed to dash to safety, but John ran back in to try and find his two puppies.

Malaki tried to run back inside with him, but John pulled him out before he could run back into the inferno.

'I owe him everything,' John said. 'As long as I've got my wife and I've got Malaki here, I'm sure everything will be fine,' John said while looking at the charred remains of his house.

Sadly, the news reporter does state near the end of the segment that "The two puppies did not make it out of the fire." Glad Malaki saved the humans and the other dog. Great job, Malaki!

Haha @ "Boxer-Lab." That there is an American Staffordshire. But any how..awesome story. Just goes to show you why dog is mans (and womans) best friend. And why Pits are awesome dogs. I own two of the little darlings.

It is a boxer-lab mix. I think you were looking at the dog in the commercial.

Ummm, no that is a Staffordshire, and anyone who owns one can see one from a mile away. Really is sad though that they have to "change" their dog's breed for tv. Give credit where it is due, Staffis get such a bad rap, for heaven's sake let them get some good publicity, they deserve it!!!

Pits AKA the nanny breed just a little note about their past. Pits were at one time considered the nanny breed cause of their loyalty to the family especially the little ones. The only reason pits have a bad reputation is due to misguided understanding. All dogs of any breed will have those that no matter what we do will be aggressive and its not breed specific. The only reason pits are labeled killers is cause when you do come across a aggressive one it will end up deadly cause of their strength and unfortunately they respond with deadly force. Rotts, german sheps, dobies , chows , even tiny chi's are more likely to be aggressive the only difference they are not likely to bring it to a life threatening end. They usually attack out of fear and when they attack they will stop when they feel safe

Sadly the puppies did not make it out. But what an awesome dog! There are so many great dogs and smart as a whip waiting to be adopted. I have had both spca and store bought. Spca wins by a long shot!!

Just read the local newspaper article. Two adult dogs survived, but John was unable to save two puppies.
