Paul Stanley: Kiss miffed at Rock Hall over snub

NEW YORK (AP) - Paul Stanley of Kiss wants to shout it out loud: The band is miffed at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for not inducting members Eric Singer and Tommy Thayer along with the original lineup.

Kiss is scheduled to be inducted into the Rock Hall on April 10 in New York City. But Stanley said in an interview Friday with The Associated Press that he doesn't think the Rock Hall is being fair and that the organization has altered their rules for other acts.

"We have continuing issues with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, starting with the fact that they chose to only induct the original lineup when that's hardly the case with other bands," he said from Los Angeles.

"In the Grateful Dead's case, (they) also inducted a writer who never played an instrument," said Stanley, referring to Robert Hunter's inclusion when the band was inducted in 1994. "Or they've inducted rap artists, or they've inducted people who have been in the band for seven years as opposed to ... 25 years or 20 years - whatever their criteria of this week is."

A representative for the Rock Hall didn't immediately return an email seeking comment. Acts become eligible for induction 25 years after the release of their first record.

Kiss wrote on its website last month that it would not perform at the Rock Hall induction.

The original members from 1973 - Stanley, Gene Simmons, Peter Criss and Ace Frehley - are scheduled for induction. Criss left the band in 1980 and Frehley left in 1982. Other members joined during the 1980s, but the current lineup includes Singer, who joined in 1992, and Thayer, who came on board in 2003.

Stanley, 62, said the Rock Hall "tried to strong-arm us into playing in original lineup," but the band would not do so.

"Their craving of nostalgia or for wanting to have us play by their rules in many ways jeopardizes what we have spent 40 years building," he said. "I've been there since the beginning, and when I put on my Kiss gear, I do it with great pride, and anything that may jeopardize that by going out with a lineup that I might question is a nonstarter for me."

Thayer and Singer should be inducted, he said, because they "have been in the band for decades and played on multiplatinum albums and toured the world."

He ended with this: "So, in this case, very clearly the tail doesn't wag the dog, and Kiss is a big dog, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a small tail."

Nirvana, Peter Gabriel, Hall and Oates, Linda Ronstadt and Cat Stevens will also be inducted at the 29th-annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony at the Barclays Center. Rolling Stones manager Andrew Loog Oldham and the late Beatles manager Brian Epstein will receive Ahmet Ertegun awards, a nonperforming honor. And Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band will get an award for musical excellence.

The event will air in May on HBO.

Simmons and Stanley don't give a crap about the KISS Army, their legions of fans that followed them from the beginning or shortly thereafter. Without Ace and Peter, there was no KISS!! They were legends by 1977, and who was in the band?! I've no disrespect toward Eric and Tommy at all -- I saw them a couple of years ago, and they are awesome musicians and performers. However, this induction recognizes the band that made us first take notice and pay attention: those men in make-up from the mid 70's.
If Gene and Paul screw this up, I for one am done with them. They won't feel my loss, that's plain. But a bigger boycott from the Army would send a message. Also, I'd love to hear how Eric and Tommy feel about this...They've been TOO quiet, don't ya think??
HoF KISS equals Criss, Frehley, Simmons and Stanley.

Nirvana is in, UG, so many, too many, real bands ignored, year after year. They were exploited, and it caught on in the "Grunge" Seattle minor invasion. Just So Sad. Pearl Jam STILL going from that era, and way too many before, ignored. Read The intelligent posts below, of accurate potential inductees. Might as well induct "Hole" or Lady Gagga.
Even Better, The Freakin' Foo Fighters beat out Nirvana, Sorry for the truth.
Smells like rock and roll hall of fame, continued Bullshit.

LOVE Paul Stanleys Stance on the WHOLE band over the years, Impressive for an Old school Rock and Roll trooper to voice the truth, of his opinion, NICE

"Ten" is Pearl Jam's FIRST official album release. It was released in August of 1991. The band won't be eligible for the Hall until 2016. Nirvana's first album was "Bleach"--released in 1989. (The Foo Fighters won't be eligible until 2019.)

And you won't have to worry about Lady Gaga--she won't be eligible for the Hall until at least 2033. (You'll probably be completely senile by that time, anyway.)

Sorry- I get that the other new band members have been there for awhile. Still- KISS is the 4 original band members. That is the "KISS" that 99% remember and liked. Sorry there were problems and Peter and Ace left, but let's face it- that was and will always be KISS.

Seriously, though, aren't there other bigger problems in the world to worry about? Really?

Well Paul, if they induct Eric and Tommy why not all the other Kiss tribute bands? Those guys are bad imitations of Pete and Ace.... Come on dude, if they had their own costumes and personality but they DON'T. Paul if one of the credentials to get into the hall of fame was to be a good person to your fans, then only Gene, Peter, and Ace would be in.... You're a Dick and always have been. I've meet Paul several times over the years and every time the guys been a *******!

And Gene isn't a d*ck? Then again, you are a KISS fan. I don't set the bar too high for those.
