Diplomatic exit? Ukraine players converge on paris

PARIS (AP) -- Top diplomats from the major players trying to find an end to the crisis in Ukraine are gathering in Paris on Wednesday as tensions simmered over the Russian military takeover of the strategic Crimean Peninsula.

The envoys from Russia, Ukraine, the U.S., Britain and France are not necessarily all at the same table, but French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said everyone has been working non-stop for a diplomatic solution over tensions in Ukraine.

"We have a principle of firmness but at the same time of searching for dialogue," Fabius said as he stood alongside his Ukrainian counterpart, making his first trip abroad in the new post.

Russia took over Crimea on Saturday, placing troops around its ferry, military bases and border posts.

"Today the Ukrainian future will be decided," Andriy Deshchytsia, Ukraine's foreign minister, said of the meetings in Paris. "We want to keep neighborly relations with the Russian people. We want to settle this peacefully."

Wednesday's gathering, originally scheduled to deal with the Syrian refugee crisis, came after Russian President Vladimir Putin appeared to step back from the brink of war, but the crisis is far from resolved.

Ukraine is near bankruptcy, and the European Union's executive arm was supposed to decide Wednesday on a package of support measures to add to the $1 billion energy subsidy package aid promised by the U.S. Russian troops remain.

Putin does not recognize the new Ukrainian leadership in Kiev, which in turn accuses Russia of a military invasion in Crimea.

Putin may be the son of satan but he is not stupid and and it makes no sense for him to pick a fight with the US anymore than we want to pick one with him. With the current situation, the West needs his help in Syria and Iran and he wants, no he needs, the sale of gas and oil to Western Europe as much as they need to buy it; he's not stupid enough to risk hundreds of billions of rubles over a fight he doesn't intend to make. He needs to wealth and the ability to influence events in Western Europe and if he drives them to sanctions, he loses both. He needs that money to rebuild Mother Russia to her former superpower glory. That is his focus and what drives his policies. Could it be that something else is going on somewhere and while the whole world is focused on the Ukraine, no one is paying attention? Is there something going on under the radar, that will have bad consequences down the road, because our "leaders" were focused on the Ukraine and not elsewhere. It may be that the former KGB Colonel simply overestimated his power of intimidation, it happens.

What else is going on? Try Venezuala where Russia has been sending personel to build Bases capable of supporting Backfire Bombers.

Try Chinese Ships painting Japanese Naval vessels with Missle Radar , fly overs , and Readiness Excercises . Oh did I mention the Anti Carrier capable missles now dug in along their Coast ? Yes , While Obama has made Speeches , and the Repubs have shut down the Govt ............

Communism has been busy flexing its World Muscles .

Really Bangor ? Instead of BLINDLY beating your Party Drum ..........learn the FACTS. Soundbytes arent reality.

The Dems are busy appeasing Terrorists , catering to Illegals , seizing guns, and being soft on Defense. The Repubs (Far Right) are too busy preaching Ol time Religion , making sure the Rich dont get Taxed , the Unemployed starve , and fighting Obamacare

Right now BOTH Parties stink.

We have an 18 year olf girl, still in high school, who is sueing her parents to pay all her expenses and tuition though she moved out. Thats the problem with America that Putin sees as weakness and is taking advantage of.

Putin will not give in because he knows that Ukraine is vitality strategic to his Black Sea fleet. He knows that he is being tested. And, he also knows that he must pass the test.

In other words , we don't know what the hell to do . We sure don't want to go to war over this place .Putin doesn't seem to give a crap what we say . Our people have no more stomach for war .And I have to get relected in a year or two . I'm sure not going to be the one to pull the trigger . And Obama is now officially a whining, pouting , which way is the wind blowing , chicken . So lets go shoot some hoops , and wait for the wind to change direction . No drawing redlines this time cause we'll have to keep moving them

You have to Sign In first to leave a comment.ns, take over one of tir most straegic bases and move closer to a hosstile United States and NATO, Putin's job is to do what is right for russia, not what the USG or EU wants. He has all of the leverage, his economy is clearly much smaller than our but he has the resources Europe needs and is currently buying 1.6 Billion DOllarsw worth of militaty hardware from the French, they are delivering a helicopter carrier today, this Ukraine did not stop the French from delivering it. Europe depends on Russia for the majority of its natural gas and oiul, Putin can turn out the lights whenever he wants, he also has a major cash surplus that both hte USA and Europe lack. The Ukraine has very few cards, Putin has a full deck. He has by far the strongest military in Europe, the French and British militaries can all be fit into a football stadium. I doubt that this will turn into a war but it is important to understand what is at stake for the Russians and what capabilities vis-a-vis Europe and America. America has offer the Ukraine a $1 Billion guarantee anf the EU $800,000. The Russians offered the last Ukrainian Government $15 in loans and has delivered $3 Billion plus a reduce oil and gas cost. It is not an even playing field, we have very little to offer but talk, the Russians and Ukrainians must make a deal. The US doesn't have the moral high ground we have invaded Iraq and Afghanistan and meddle in the affairs of God know how many countries. We have to let this paly out. WW3 will not start over the Ukraine.

You are absolutely right, this looked more like a false flag event like so many in the passed. This is more about the European union,USA and the UN gaining control and power then anything ells. Look at Syria and the fight for control for oil transportation to Europe and who this administration is supporting its not a coincidence
