High court to look at inmate's right to grow beard

Supreme Court

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Supreme Court has agreed to decide whether an Arkansas prison inmate must be allowed to grow a short beard in accordance with his religious beliefs.

The justices said Monday they will hear an appeal from inmate Gregory Holt, who says his Muslim beliefs require him to grow a beard.

State corrections officials say their grooming policy prohibiting beards promotes hygiene and safety.

The court previously blocked the state from forcing Holt to shave the beard while the appeal was under consideration. The case will be argued in the fall.

The 38-year-old Holt is serving a life sentence for domestic violence and burglary. The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette said in 2012 that prosecutors said Holt cut his girlfriend's throat and stabbed her in the chest at her mobile home.

I'm almost positive his religious beliefs doesn't approve of killing his girlfriend, but that didn't stop him.

I would say that some rights are OK, like maybe food, water, clean coveralls, but a beard..... only if he can grow it on his butt cheeks. Stop the gaming of the system folks.

Let me make sure I have this right. I served my country in the U. S. Air Force and couldn't have a beard, and this piece of foreign scum commits a felony, appeals to the SCOTUS and can grow one? Shave his whole damn head, and let him grow a beard under his/her arm pits. And make him run in place when he shaves each day thereafter. This is prison, not summer camp.

He doesn't sound very "religious" to me. You don't respect human life so why should anyone respect your effing beard? Please, give me a break. Please.

First of all, religious beleif means nothing in certain circumstances, this being one of them. All prisoners should live by the same rules, that is just common sense. Second, how can HE logically claim anything because of religious belief when he himself violated his own belief. Unless, official Muslim belief dictates they can kill people for no reason. But then, he shouldn't be in jail to begin with. If not, logic dictates he should be in jail, and he can't bring up his religious beliefs in an argument, because he doesn't go by them.

Is this really the most important thing that the Supreme court must address? This and the entire legal system, along withe the tax laws and loopholes are a sham. Let the States delegate their own prisons and laws and get the Federal Government off our backs. It's bad enough that the States take our money and have no financial responsibility of that money for the good of the people and the Feds are making a mockery of the Constitution!

He should have thought about that before he tried to take his girls life. Inmates should not have rights. Just my opinion.

This is unbelievable that a person in jail has a case before the supreme court about a beard. The court should be supporting a law that says individuals that are convicted of having broken the law looses there rights at the prison gate. They gave those rights up when they broke the law. That should be part of the punishment and not just the lose of their freedom to move around.

When you're in the US, regardless of your religion... if you do the crime, you DO the time! All the rules should be the same in prison for everyone. Sick and tired of Muslims moaning about this or that. If you don't like it here, go back to your Muslim Country. No beard for anyone, period!

This is a joke, right? With all the problems this country has the Supreme Court is hearing arguments about a beard! This guy is scum and is using religion to get into the news. This should have never gone this far. I guess his sorry muslim religion said he could stab his girlfriend. islam is not a religion it is a political belief.
