Disney Will End Funding To Boy Scouts Over Anti-Gay Policy

Disney Cuts Funding To Boy Scouts Over Anti-Gay Policies

LOS ANGELES (AP) - The Walt Disney Company will cut funding to the Boy Scouts of America beginning in 2015 because of a policy that bans gay adult leaders in the organization.

The Boy Scouts organization is "disappointed" by the decision, which will affect the organization's ability to serve children, Deron Smith, a Boy Scouts spokesman, said in a statement Sunday. Disney does not provide direct funding to the Boy Scouts, but it donates money to some troops in exchange for volunteer hours completed by Disney employees, he said.

"We believe every child deserves the opportunity to be a part of the Scouting experience and we are disappointed in this decision because it will impact our ability to serve kids," he said.

David Jefferson, chief spokesman for The Walt Disney Company, did not respond to calls or emails.

Disney's decision came to light after the president of a local Boy Scout council based in Orlando, Fla., where Disney World is based, sent a memo alerting local troops to the decision.

The memo was posted on the website of Scouts for Equality, an organization that is critical of the Boy Scouts' policy to ban adult gay troop leaders.

The Boy Scouts lifted a ban on gay youth last year.

Note to the Scouts, there have always been gay leaders.
Whether you were aware or not.

Yes, those who put the task at hand (leading boys) ahead of their sex life. People who feel the need to proclaim their sexuality to the world are probably not in the best position to be leading little boys in anything.... especially not a week in the woods. Give the scouts some credit. They stopped the ban on gay scouts. Things do take time, and since faith in God is a big part of scouts, it IS necessary to figure out the logistics of change when a large number of charter organizations that give the scouts a place to meet and store all of their gear are churches. In the meantime, if you're not able to be patient, it's probably not the place for you or your kid.

I give the Scouts absolutely NO CREDIT. They are every bit as bad as the Catholic Church when it comes to protecting pedophiles. the only reason they want to keep the gay guys out is because they know as well as anyone that the gay guys will ruin their fun by TURNING IN the pedophiles.

How do I know this? It's common sense--if the gay guys don't TURN IN the pedophiles, they will end up being accused of BEING the pedophiles.

Your kids are safer in any gay bar than they are at school, at church, or at that Boy Scout meeting.

Can we have at least one American Institution undefiled by perversion? The American public will soon need Boy Scout cookies to replace girls Scouts' which has caved in to the radical perverts.

Companies like Disney should take a neutral stand on matters that don't directly concern them. The Boy Scouts voted to allow openly gay boys, but not openly gay leaders.. They have to right to discriminate than anyone else.

Disney also has the right to discriminate. While I don't believe in discrimination, it's wrong on so many levels, those "openly gay boys" that the scouts have decided to allow in will become openly gay men someday. Will they be turned away from becoming scout leaders then? Will the scouts throw them out before they get old enough to become leaders?

Cut off funding or fund sexual abuse settlements. Not that every gay man is a predator, but the rule is there for a reason and history doesn't lie.

Yes, history tells us that most sexual abuse is perpetrated by family members against relatives.

Not every one, but enough so it might be your son who is abused.

Those of you who vow never to go to Disneyland ever again, or buy anything related to Disney ever again. Okay.
Turn off ABC.
Turn off ESPN.
Don't see Lucas Film movies.
No A&E either.
I think it's the ESPN that'll hurt you the most!
Disney owns a lot more than just Mickey and Minnie!

In almost every area of society there is a hard push for the acceptance of those who wish to pursue the homosexual lifestyle. (not gay, for that is only a subtle way to gain acceptance by use of that word that means to be joyful). Watch almost every TV sitcom or event, i.e., Bones, CSI, etc., and there are scenes that portray homosexuals in a good light, or by in some other way to give homosexuals a pass, an approval. Even our legislature is bending over to accept this abnormal lifestyle so that they may gain votes. Now, if Walt Disney will not give donations of money to the Boy Scouts over this reluctance to accept the homosexual lifestyle, then maybe we who hold to the truth stop attending anything that has to do with Walt Disney. This will take courage and conviction, a commitment not to follow our desires or the world who has been taught to accept anything and everything, especially to accept that which is abnormal and call it normal.

I am a manager of a large corporation that hired Disney last year, where we held our corporate get-together (Anaheim). That will cease. The gay and Lesbians of the world are a small minority, in the vastness of our populous. I am not a homo-phobe, or an individual that hates any group of people and that is NOT what is being presented here. The simple question is: "Can a gay man be a leader to young men-when his orientation is attraction to men?" While most gay men, I'm sure would answer that their is no attraction to these young boys and they simply want to be a part of the scouting experience with their sons, or be a mentor to others; it still leaves open the thought process of those that would cross-the-line in inuendoes, suggestiveness or out-right crimes. Do we then open-up the girl-scouts to the same type of leadership?

Disney's efforts to be "seen" as a major corporation that supports this particular issue, tells me they gave little thought to the financial ramifications of their actions. I grew up in Boy Scouts, Achieved my Eagle Scout award, Duty to God award and Order of the Arrow. I have made corporate contributions to the Boy Scouts and will continue to do so. I guess until the Boy Scouts performs background checks and personality tests on each leader that serves, no one can determine the safety of these young men. To me Disney is no longer the Happiest Place on-earth, it is a sad reminder of a corporation trying to be politically correct, without seeing the core values of what Walt had in mind.

Thank you so much for your clear wisdom on this subject. I have 2 sons that earned their Eagle Scout Award, Duty to God, and order of the Arrow. They are very proud of their accomplishments and I do not want them to ever feel like someone is trying to tarnish what they achieved. Thank you

Well, really the Disney employees are the only reason Disney is contributing money. money which they can deduct as a charitable contribution. So, the volunteers will probably continue because they care about this program.
Can we expect a new character on the tv/big screen?
