Kerry to meet with Ukrainian officials in Kiev

AP White House Correspondent

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A senior administration official says Secretary of State John Kerry will travel to the Ukrainian capital of Kiev Tuesday to meet with government officials.

Kerry's trip comes as the U.S. and other Western nations weigh a response to Russia's military advance into Ukraine. Kerry has raised the possibility of issuing economic sanctions and visa bans, freezing Russian assets and levying trade and investment penalties.

The official says the U.S. now believes that Russia has complete operational control of the Crimea peninsula, a pro-Russian area of Ukraine, and has more than 6,000 forces in the region. The official said the U.S. is also watching for ethnic skirmishes in other areas of eastern Ukraine.

A second administration official indicated that the U.S. was not weighing military action to counter Russia's advances, saying the Obama administration's efforts were focused on political, economic and diplomatic options.

The officials were not authorized to publicly discuss the situation and insisted on anonymity.

Look the map bellow and you will see why Ukraine will be divided. The protesters in Kiev did not take this in consideration and will pay the price. Isolating other people is not democracy Too sad.
The EU and the USA are involved and responsible in this division. They thought that Russia is in same position of Yeltsin's era, when they invaded Yugoslavia without resistance. There is a Russian base in Crimea and Russians will not give up. The USA would do the same thing, if Guadanamo was challenged by Cuba. HYPOCRISY IN ITS FULLNES.
Invasion cannot stand without the support of the population. This was ignored from the nationalist "leaders" of protests. The leaders of appointed government (not elected) of Ukraine, if they support democracy beside peaceful demonstrations had to wait for elections.
This reminds naïve European policies in the pre WWII era.

I feel like somebody is going to get thrown under the bus here. Obama knows that the job is so far over his head that he does not have a chance. Now if it involved getting a favor for a supporter that he can handle, maybe. Kerry will also fail but the blame game will follow that. Stay tuned.
