Film star Sean Connery urges Scots to leave UK

Sean Connery
LONDON (AP) - Film star Sean Connery is urging fellow Scots to vote for independence when a referendum is held in September.

The longtime independence advocate says in The Sun on Sunday newspaper that the opportunity to separate from the rest of Britain is too good an opportunity to miss.

He says independence would galvanize the film and creative industries, creating new jobs in Scotland.

Connery no longer lives there and said the decision should be made by the people who choose to live and work in Scotland.

He said a vote for independence would bring renewed focus on Scottish culture, heritage and creative excellence.

His view is not shared by rock star David Bowie, who has urged Scottish voters to remain part of the United Kingdom.

Well if they do that they'll have to move the British Open or change the name.

They did change it--it's now called the Open Championship. However, this year it's in England--Merseyside in Liverpool.

No need. They arrogantly call it "The Open."

It is all about economics and if the numbers work, I say independence for Scotland and Ireland. And, how about one more James Bond movie?

The Scots should have their right of self-determination as should Northern Ireland with respect to Ireland. It's unhealthy for Northern Ireland to be so-called merely because of religion.

I agree with you about Ireland not being divided, but you're wrong about religion. Catholic Irish didn't want to work for the British because they considered them to be invaders. The British Govt. then rounded up dissidents from many places in the UK and shipped them to Ireland as a workforce while the native Irish consider them as just more invaders.
The native Irish are majority Catholic while the new workforce is primarily Protestant, but that's circumstance, they are still invaders - and the fight goes on. I'm not Irish, but my wife is, and that was the history as she and my Irish in- laws have informed me.

A very good argument had been made that if Scotland does separate, it will not be allowed to join the EU. Reason being the sepratist yearnings of regions in Spain, Belgium and Italy.
These nations do not want a precedent set. And will hang together to not allow new nation status.
What will happen to the Nordic Islands, Orkney and Shetland? They lean more to Oslo or London . And may prefer to be attached one of those capitals.

Should Scotland separate? It's up to the Scots to decide. They were "invaded" and forced to become part of the United Kingdom, and ruled by what are now foreigners. OK the royal family isn't really British, they are German and Greek but......An independent Scotland would allow the Scots to shine. They can make it on their own. There would be a renewed spark a renewed pride and the Scots have always been hard workers. With the amount of oil off of the Scottish coast in the North Sea, if they do it right they could become another Norway. A country of millionaires with free health care, free education and an example to Europe. Scotland IT'S YOUR CHOICE! And if you want to wear kilts with no underwear that's your business too....

That's what a referendum is! This comes around every so often by a group of people that want to be independent, the Scots vote on it and then majority want to stay part of Great Britain. I don't think this time will be any different.
