Belfort gives up title shot after Nevada bans TRT

Vitor Belfort has dropped out of his upcoming UFC middleweight title shot a few hours after the Nevada Athletic Commission banned testosterone replacement therapy.
Belfort was scheduled to fight 185-pound champion Chris Weidman in Las Vegas at UFC 173 on May 24. His title shot was given to Lyoto Machida on Thursday night.

The 36-year-old Belfort has been open about his use of synthetic testosterone for a few years. The former light heavyweight champion's sanctioned steroid use has coincided with an improbable career resurgence for three consecutive early round knockout victories in 2013.

The influential Nevada commission voted unanimously on Thursday to stop granting therapeutic use exemptions for TRT, closing a widely criticized loophole that allowed fighters to compete on steroids.Belfort says he'll continue fighting, but without TRT.

Please get your facts straight befor publishing an artical like this . Testosterone is not a steroid . Test is a natural hormone in the human body . Steroids are syntheticly altered compounds that although are similar to test have very different actions . Low testosterone is a medical condition that if you have it have terrible effects on your health and quality of life . I have low t and I can tell you that HRT has changed my life and I would never go back . Ask anyone else on HRT and they will tell you the same . Simple blood tests can give the blood levels of test and the rule should simply be they have to be in the normal range . This would eliminate any so called loophole or advantage from this therapy in sports . Why would we want to make it so that our athletes have to live their lives sick ? Do we test all athletes and penalize them if their test is in the normal range ? For those confused by the recent study that is a whole other subject and for every study you can find showing risk factors for increased stroke and heart disease there is one showing no such increase . Does the media report that ? Or that alot of the test subjects were 70 yr old men with pre excisting CVD . Anyway that is off the topic . Bottom line is if he were a diabetic would we keep him from insulin ? Just test the levels and keep them in the normal range and problem solved !

I know people who do steroids and I hate to say it, but levels are probably low from doing the steroids in the first place. Steroids are not good. All I can say is roid rage is not pretty. Not the same person after doing steroids. Please stay away from them. They have ruined my family's lives. Also it is cheating.

Wow, there's a lot of ignorance on this board. A sport with significantly fewer long-term injuries, much safer than boxing or football. But the nancies on this board can't stand the sight of blood, so therefore it's neanderthal in nature. Stupid.

As for testerone, it IS natural and is an outstanding method of helping those with low testerone. The reason it's banned in many sports is because your testosterone drops between cycles when you're taking steroids, and some use this to bring the depressed levels back up. Therefore, it can be argued that it indicates cyclical steroid use. Unfortunately, since some people (especially aging athletes) see a natural drop in testerone, they get caught up in the mix.

Wanna see your child a vegetable at 50? Let them play football or box. Neither of those are likely to have that result, but they're both more likely to do so than MMA.

Steroids and synthetic testosterone are two different things. Get the facts jack before you write an article.

Crazy how everything wrong with the world has become a poliitcal issue.. Then we have idiots who blame it on one party.. UFC will definitely have issues some day with the fighters.. Why should anyone have an advantage by using steroids? I guess we should all JUICE UP and look like freaks . This sport will never survive over time if they were to continue allowing steroids. Even democrats should be able to agree, dont you think ? PEACH2MAN
