Whale slaps girl in the face

WATCH: Massive Whale Slaps Girl In The Face

Whale watching might seem like a harmless adventure on the water, but for one group of tourists in Mexico it was a completely different story.

A boat carrying students off the coast of Baja California got up close and personal over the weekend when a whale swam underneath, flipped its tail out of the water and smacked an unsuspecting girl right in the face!

Ouch! The incident was caught on a cell phone camera and uploaded to YouTube. The girl who got the whale tale whack was identified as Chelsea Crawford from Nova Scotia.

Luckily, she's alright, but we expect she'll do her whale watching from the shore from now on.

That's not the whale's tail, but a flipper!

I thought that too but if you watch the full Youtube version you can clearly see it's the tail.

What do expect when you go into the whale's home unannounced? But she now has a whale of a tale to tell.

We are surprised by the intelligence of other creatures. Why? It would look to me as if the whale was deliberately interacting with the group, either playfully, or as an annoyance (think swatting a fly).

Actually the boatmen have no control over what the whales do, and it appears as if the boat was either moving very slowly or even stopped. This sort of thing happens in those waters where the whales go to have their calves......the animals are quite curious about the boats and the people in them and often come up beside the boat and look at the visitors and allow themselves to be touched.
