'Antiques Roadshow': Personal Photo Collection Worth Shocking Amount

'Antiques Roadshow': Personal Photo Collection Worth Shocking Amount

"Antiques Roadshow" headed to Baton Rouge this week, where a man named Jack brought in a one-of-a-kind collection.

Jack used to be a test director on the NASA zero-gravity airplane known as the "Vomit Comet." (Yuck.) Between 1962 and 1977, Jack worked side-by-side with a bunch of astronauts. He had his co-workers sign pictures during that time -- and the collection proved to be very valuable. Each picture was worth at least $200 -- and Jack had dozens of them.

Appraiser Grant Zahajko said, "The collection in total, we would put an estimate between $35,000 and $45,000 at auction."

Jack simply couldn't believe it. "Wow. You've got to be kidding. I am just speechless. I thought maybe $2,000 to $4,000, something like that."

In a behind-the-scenes interview, Jack told the show he wished he had more. He said had he realized how amazing and historic his job was at the time, he would've collected a lot more autographs!

Just remember, something is worth only what someone is willing to pay for it.

I'll give him a Kit Kat bar and $25 bucks for the collection. Nice but I did collect it so no value to me.

The estimates are always pie in the sky inflated figues. And collectibles have taken a major dump recently. Hint: if you are keeping things you think may have value and you have old estimates of the value, prepare to be shocked. What's inflating: high end art, furnishings, real Tiffany lamps, genuine art deco pieces--in other words, items that create their own space rather than just occupying it. Early to mid 20th century lighting, art nouveau pieces are going up. Functionals that work and have been carefully cared for or restored properly can be valuable.

I like the dollar figures they pay on Pawn Stars--compare them with the Roadshow valuations and you'll get a clue.

Duh. Pawn Stars low balls everything! They pay low so they can resell HIGH.

I can’t believe some of the prices on Pawn Stars or Pickers. Some of the good items are low-balled, since they do have to make rent, payroll, etc., but I've seen them buy junk at inflated prices. That barbeque pig- it is still on sale for $50.
On Antiques Road Show, all the figures are "insurance figures" or retail value, Sometimes I think they give high values to raise retail prices, as many of them are dealers.

I'm tying to make the Guiness book by collecting the most signatures/letterheads of bill collectors.
It's coming along really well!
