Spelling Bee Runs Out Of Words

A spelling bee in Kansas City, Missouri came to an unusual end over the weekend. There was no winner .... because judges ran out of words.

Sophia Hoffman, 11, and 13-year-old Kush Sharma tied at the Jackson County Spelling Bee after 5 hours and 66 rounds. Last year's competition only went 21 rounds, according The Kansas City Star.

The event started with 25 contestants, but only after 19 did it come down to Hoffman and Sharma. Organizers had to take a break to come up with new words to give the young contestants after having used up all of the ones provided by the Scripps National Spelling Bee - which, according to it's website, covers more than 450 words.

Officials reportedly chose 20 words out of a Merriam-Webster dictionary during a lunch break, but decided not to go any further for fear of giving one student an easier word.

It's not o-v-e-r yet, though. The contest will resume March 8th and the winner will go on to the National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., in May.
