Canada-3 sled crashes in 4-man bobsled at Olympics

APTOPIX Sochi Olympics Bobsleigh Men

KRASNAYA POLYANA, Russia (AP) - One of Canada's three bobsleds crashed during the second run of the Olympic four-man competition.

Driver Justin Kripps, with three new brakemen in his sled, flipped on one of the curves on the Sanki Sliding Center track Saturday. The bobsled slid through several turns on its side with the team member's helmeted heads digging scarily into the ice. All four were checked by medical personnel as they climbed out of the sled, and none of the men appeared to be injured as they walked up the hill to the finish area.

On Saturday, Canada's coaches pulled brakemen Jesse Lumsden, Cody Sorensen and Ben Coakwell from Canada-1 with driver Chris Spring and put them with Kripps, who had better training times.

Canada-3 was in eighth place after the first run.

A front and rear roll bar would make these sleds far, far safer and prevent the occupants head from being slammed into the ice. Safety should always be placed above speed.

If all sleds had bars of same weight and configuration, the competition would still be balanced.

I remember the bad old days when poorly built tracks were the source of many injuries and fatalities.
The tracks today are much safer.

Being upsidedown in anything going fast is not good.

Maybe making that switch was the wrong thing to do. I'm glad none of them got hurt, other than their pride being bruised. Bob sledding is a very dangerous sport, and takes alot of skill to compete in. Seems like every Olympics the tracts get harder and faster, and the sleds get lighter. Maybe there should be a standard set in the design of future bob sled tracts.

I guess I don't understand why the Koreans won medals for Russia? The skaters were all Koreans against Koreans for different Countries. Do they live there or is it the better payoff. I thought the Olympics was Country against Country, but maybe it's against the countries that pay the most. And how do the Pro Hockey players fit in? How much are they being paid to be there?
Cheers to the Jamaican Bob Sledders, they lend a needed smile to the Games.

I know one of the Koreans was upset with his Korean coach, he went to Russia and became citizen (spelling) of Russia

The weight limit for 4 men is 1,389 LB and for a 2 person sled the limit for a 2 person sled is 827 LB. ... members lean backward then go forward real fast like snapping forward. ... They go up to 118 mph but the average speed is about 60 to 90 mph.
Going 90 MPH upside down with you face on the ice and 1300# on your back has got to hurt.

Maybe they need to redesign the sled so it doesn't tip over. Some of these things do not offer much protection at those speeds.......so I think that is where the changes need to happen

A roll bar might hinder their ability to get in at the beginning of the race.

It's evident that you have never lived along the border with Canada. You would have a different opinion.
