Police Officer Risks Life to Save Teen Stuck in Car on Fire

Oklahoma police officer Clayton Hicks put his life on the line when he decided to rescue Edison High School senior Zach Whitney, who was stuck inside a burning car.

Whitney told KOKI he thought he was going to die ('I accepted death') and he is so thankful to Hicks.

Whitney says his friend, who was driving, had tried to switch lanes when he lost control of the car. He was in the middle of the back seat without a seat belt.

Whitney says he still has flashbacks of the awful event. He suffered from 4 broken ribs, a collapsed lung and a fractured lower back and says he couldn't move to get out of the car.

KOTV reports the officer had no idea this would happen on what started as a typical Saturday morning patrol.

'It was great to be out here and be at the right place at the right time. That's what we signed up for is to help people, and it's good when that stuff comes into fruition,' Hicks said.

All five passengers were taken to a local hospital. Officer Hicks is truly a hero.

Well, good story, and finally the last sentence uses a capitol O for Officer. but not proof reading it! Hope the writing improves.

great story. I hope young Zach will honor Officer Hicks by always strapping himself in when he gets in a car.

there are plenty of good cop stories. most cops are GOOD cops we just hear about the bad ones most often because that is what people want to read about.

most I am sure start out good. Young and idealistic. Then they realize they have to uphold the "blue wall" or be harassed into resigning

His heroism is resplendent; imagine if we could all be as heroic in our everyday quietly lived lives that only God knows about. Perhaps we are without others knowing about it. God bless us all.
